Job Description
Transnet Freight Rail is inviting applications for the position of Trainee Train Assistant based in Belfast. This opportunity is ideal for candidates who have completed Grade 12 and are interested in building a career in the railway transport and logistics sector.
The purpose of the Trainee Train Assistant role is to assist the Train Driver in the safe and efficient operation of different types of trains and locomotives. This ensures freight and cargo reach destinations safely, on time, and in good condition to meet customer service requirements.
The successful candidate will receive both theoretical and practical training to become a certified Train Assistant capable of working independently. This role requires strong discipline, physical fitness, attention to safety, and the ability to work shifts under operational conditions.
The Trainee Train Assistant will assist in preparing locomotives, performing brake tests, checking communication equipment, carrying out shunting duties, and helping the Train Driver during journeys. They will also help protect trains during emergencies, complete journals, and perform basic administration duties.

Key Responsibilities
- Sign on duty and receive shift allocations.
- Prepare locomotives for operation.
- Check and load required equipment.
- Assist with starting locomotives and brake tests.
- Prepare radios, handsets, and communication tools.
- Conduct pre-trip train inspections.
- Attach and detach vehicles where required.
- Execute shunting and siding activities safely.
- Assist the Train Driver during journeys.
- Compare signals and observe track conditions.
- Protect the train during incidents or emergencies.
- Complete train journals and submit reports after shifts.
Requirements
Educational Requirements
- Grade 12 / Matric with Pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science.
Other Requirements
- Must be 21 years or older.
- Minimum height of 1.6 metres.
- Must be physically fit.
- Good hearing, vision, and mental fitness.
- Ability to carry heavy objects.
- Willing to undergo medical tests and safety assessments.
- Must be willing to work shifts.
