Cashbuild is inviting external applications for the position of General Assistant at its Newcastle store in KwaZulu-Natal. The purpose of the General Assistant role is to provide excellent customer service while ensuring that stock merchandising, shelf pricing, and housekeeping standards are maintained within the assigned area of responsibility. Successful candidates will assist customers with product enquiries, maintain store presentation, and ensure a safe and organised shopping environment.
The General Assistant will be responsible for helping customers locate products, answering questions, and assisting with complaints in a professional and friendly manner. Strong communication skills and a customer-focused attitude are essential for this role. Candidates should be comfortable working with people and providing service with a positive attitude.
Merchandising duties include ensuring shelves are fully stocked, bulk stock areas are neatly arranged, and products are displayed according to store layouts and planograms. The successful applicant must also ensure that shelf labels and prices are accurate and clearly visible to customers.
Housekeeping is another important part of the role. Candidates will need to keep aisles free from obstacles, unpack stock promptly, and maintain a clean, safe, and tidy working area. They may also be required to complete canteen, toilet, or shower cleaning checklists while on duty.
The position also requires compliance with Occupational Health and Safety regulations. Employees must use safety equipment where required, ensure safe movement of stock, and report hazards or discrepancies to the Store Manager immediately.

Key Responsibilities
- Provide excellent customer service in store.

Requirements
- Minimum Grade 10 or NQF Level 3 with 1 year related experience, or Grade 12 with no experience.
- Ability to communicate in English and local dominant language.
- Valid South African ID or legal work permit.
- Ability to perform basic calculations accurately.
- Must be willing to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays.
- Must be able to work under pressure.
