Role Purpose
The purpose of this role is to conduct outreach activities within the PWID community by:
- Providing accurate and up-to-date health information
- Encouraging individuals to access healthcare services
- Supporting linkage to care for HIV, TB, and related services
This role is community-based and requires strong interpersonal skills and lived experience or understanding of the PWID environment.
Key Responsibilities
Community Outreach and Education
- Provide health education on:
- HIV/AIDS
- Tuberculosis (TB)
- Hepatitis
- Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH)
- Harm reduction and safe injecting practices
Harm Reduction Support
- Distribute harm reduction packs and safer sex commodities
- Collect used injecting equipment safely using sharps bins
- Promote safe and responsible health practices
Linkage to Care
- Refer individuals living with HIV or TB to appropriate health services
- Support access to mobile clinics, drop-in centres, or nearby health facilities
- Encourage HIV testing and prevention methods such as PrEP
Psychosocial Support
- Provide emotional support and guidance
- Refer individuals to social services when needed
- Conduct follow-ups to ensure continued care
Programme Support
- Recruit individuals for Opioid Substitution Therapy (OST) programmes
- Identify and support women who inject drugs by providing dignity packs
- Assist in meeting programme targets and outreach goals
Minimum Requirements
To qualify for this role, applicants must meet the following:
- Grade 10
- At least 1 year of experience working within the PWID community or as a peer educator
- Must be a current or former person who uses or has injected drugs (peer requirement)
- Ability to read and write in English
- Proficiency in isiXhosa, Afrikaans, English, or other South African languages
- Clear criminal record
