Pattern Making Programme (PMP)

Pattern Making Programme (PMP) Intern

Six-Month Industry Training Opportunity

The Pattern Making Programme (PMP) is an intensive, six-month training initiative designed to develop technically skilled, industry-ready pattern makers for South Africa’s clothing and textile manufacturing sector. This programme responds directly to the growing demand for skilled pattern makers by combining structured theoretical learning with practical, hands-on workplace experience.

Based in Durban, the PMP provides interns with the opportunity to build essential technical skills, gain exposure to real manufacturing environments, and develop professional competencies required in pattern-making roles within the apparel industry.

About the Programme

The Pattern Making Programme is structured to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry practice. Interns participate in a balanced learning model consisting of two weeks of classroom-based theory and two weeks of practical workplace experience each month. This approach allows participants to immediately apply what they learn in a real-world manufacturing context.

Throughout the programme, interns work alongside experienced pattern makers and industry professionals, gaining insight into production processes, quality standards, and best practices currently used in manufacturing environments.

The programme is designed for individuals who are motivated, detail-oriented, and interested in building a technical career in pattern making and garment production.

Key Learning Areas

During the six-month programme, interns will receive training and exposure in the following areas:

  • Creating accurate patterns from design sketches and technical drawings
  • Understanding garment construction and fit principles
  • Using pattern-making software and digital tools efficiently
  • Applying grading and sizing techniques
  • Interpreting specifications and production requirements
  • Implementing sustainable and efficient pattern-making practices
  • Understanding manufacturing workflows and production timelines
  • Collaborating within a production or design team
  • Communicating ideas clearly and professionally in a workplace setting

The programme focuses on developing both technical competence and workplace readiness, ensuring interns understand the expectations and standards of the manufacturing sector.

Practical Workplace Experience

A core component of the Pattern Making Programme is hands-on workplace exposure. Interns spend half of each month in a practical manufacturing environment, where they:

  • Observe and support experienced pattern makers
  • Assist with pattern development and adjustments
  • Gain exposure to factory operations, tools, and equipment
  • Learn quality control and production preparation processes
  • Experience day-to-day workflow in a manufacturing setting

This practical component is designed to help interns build confidence, apply skills in real scenarios, and better understand how pattern making fits into the broader production process.

Who Should Apply

This opportunity is suitable for individuals who:

  • Have an interest in fashion, clothing production, or manufacturing
  • Are eager to develop technical and practical skills
  • Are comfortable working in a structured learning and workplace environment
  • Can commit to a full-time, six-month programme
  • Are based in or able to travel to Durban for the duration of the programme

Previous experience or formal training in fashion or pattern making may be beneficial but is not always required, depending on the programme’s intake criteria. A strong willingness to learn and a professional attitude are essential.

Programme Duration and Location
  • Duration: Six months
  • Location: Durban, KwaZulu-Natal
  • Schedule: Combination of classroom-based learning and workplace experience each month

Applicants must be able to attend in-person training and practical sessions as required by the programme schedule.

Professional Development and Career Exposure

While the programme does not guarantee employment, it is designed to enhance participants’ technical skills, industry exposure, and employability within the manufacturing sector. Interns leave the programme with:

  • Practical pattern-making experience
  • Improved understanding of industry expectations
  • Exposure to professional manufacturing environments
  • Enhanced teamwork and communication skills

These outcomes aim to support participants in pursuing entry-level roles or further opportunities within the clothing and textile manufacturing industry.
