Job Overview

Exxaro Resources invites suitably qualified candidates to apply for two (2) permanent General Worker positions at its Coastal Coal Durnacol operation in KwaZulu-Natal. This opportunity is ideal for individuals who are safety-conscious, physically fit, and committed to supporting sustainable mining operations.

The General Worker role plays a vital part in supporting daily operational activities, environmental rehabilitation, and workplace safety initiatives. Successful candidates will contribute to maintaining operational standards while supporting Exxaro’s commitment to safety, sustainability, and community development.

Purpose of the Role

The primary purpose of the General Worker role is to provide operational support across various work areas, with a strong focus on environmental rehabilitation, safety compliance, and equipment operation. The role requires hands-on involvement in maintaining rehabilitated areas, operating tools and equipment, and identifying potential safety risks.

General Workers are expected to actively contribute to a safe and productive work environment while supporting supervisors and operational teams.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidates will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties:

Health, Safety, and Environmental Compliance

Comply with all health and safety regulations and promote a safe working environment at all times.
Wear the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and ensure compliance with safety procedures.
Identify, rectify, and report unsafe practices, hazardous conditions, or potential risks to supervisors.
Participate in front area inspections and ensure adherence to loading and transport procedures.

Environmental Rehabilitation and Site Maintenance

Assist with rehabilitation of mined areas by filling cracks, planting grass, and eradicating weeds.
Support environmental sustainability initiatives in line with Exxaro’s environmental management standards.
Perform waste removal and cleaning tasks to prevent blockages and ensure safe operations.

Equipment and Tool Operation

Conduct pre-use inspections and routine maintenance checks on equipment and tools.
Operate small tools and brush cutters safely in accordance with operating procedures and manufacturer guidelines.
Identify and report equipment defects or unsafe conditions promptly.
Assist with basic maintenance and upkeep of tools and equipment.

Operational Support

Support supervisors and foremen with general operational activities.
Assist various sections as instructed to ensure smooth workflow and productivity.
Communicate findings, challenges, or incidents effectively to relevant stakeholders.
Contribute to teamwork by collaborating with colleagues to meet operational objectives.

Continuous Improvement

Demonstrate creativity and problem-solving skills in addressing operational challenges.
Participate in continuous improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing safety, efficiency, and environmental performance.
Maintain awareness of the surrounding ecosystem and apply environmentally responsible practices.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:

Grade 10 / Standard 8 qualification (essential).
Adult Education and Training (AET) Level 4 (essential).
Relevant job-specific experience of 0 to 6 months.
Psychometric assessment (required).
Valid Certificate of Fitness.
Ability to comply with safety regulations and standard operating procedures.
Experience in operating and maintaining equipment.
Proficiency in operating and repairing small tools and brush cutters.
Ability to identify, rectify, and report unsafe conditions or hazardous situations.
Demonstrated commitment to maintaining a safe and healthy work environment.
Strong collaboration, problem-solving, and communication skills.
