Overview
Dis-Chem Pharmacies is seeking a reliable, customer-focused Cashier for the Walmer Park store. This role is essential in ensuring a positive customer experience at the point of sale while maintaining high levels of accuracy and professionalism. The Cashier will be responsible for processing customer purchases, managing transactions through the Dis-Chem operating system, and providing friendly and efficient service in line with company standards.
This position requires exceptional attention to detail, strong communication skills, and the ability to remain calm and helpful during busy trading hours. As a front-line representative of the store, the Cashier contributes significantly to customer satisfaction and the overall shopping experience.
Minimum Requirements
Essential:
- Grade 12 / Matric
- At least 6 months’ experience in cashier or till operations
- Basic computer literacy (MS Office)
- Strong numerical skills
- Good command of the English language
- Basic customer service skills
- Willingness and ability to work retail hours, weekends, and public holidays
Key Responsibilities
Customer Service Responsibilities
The Cashier will support Dis-Chem’s customer service standards by ensuring each shopper receives professional, friendly, and efficient assistance. This includes greeting customers, answering basic inquiries, and maintaining a helpful attitude throughout all interactions. Establishing a positive rapport with customers encourages repeat visits and contributes to overall store performance.
The Cashier will also report customer feedback—including complaints and compliments—to the Frontline Supervisor or store management. Understanding current promotions, sales, and store initiatives ensures that customers receive accurate and relevant information during their visit.
Point-of-Sale Duties
The core function of the role is to process customer transactions accurately and efficiently. This includes:
- Recording all purchases according to company procedures
- Managing cash flow responsibly
- Processing payments through multiple channels (cash, card, vouchers, coupons, and loyalty partners)
- Handling exchanges and authorised returns
- Ensuring all line voids and price changes are approved by a supervisor
The Cashier must safeguard all sensitive information, including passwords and till codes, by following company security guidelines. All cash must be kept securely in the till and deposited into the drop safe in accordance with Dis-Chem’s standard operating procedures.
Risk, Security & Compliance
The role requires strict adherence to security measures designed to protect the store, staff, and customers. The Cashier must be alert to unusual or suspicious behaviour and report concerns to management immediately. All outgoing items, including scripts, must be scanned and paid for before leaving the store.
Confidential handling of daily takings and compliance with internal processes are essential. This ensures a secure working environment and reduces the risk of errors or irregularities.
Store Support & General Administration
In addition to POS responsibilities, the Cashier may assist with customer queries related to merchandise, pricing, and product locations. Completing basic administrative tasks linked to cash management, refund processes, and loyalty card transactions is also part of the role.
This position supports the store’s 5-star communication principles, contributing to smooth daily operations and consistent service standards.
