WHOLESALE AND RETAIL RESEARCH LEADERSHIP CHAIR: EASTERN CAPE

Position

  • Wholesale and Retail Research Leadership Chair: Eastern Cape

Nature of Appointment

  • Secondment-based appointment
  • Successful candidate must be a full-time employee of Walter Sisulu University
  • University must submit a minimum of two CVs for consideration by W&RSETA

Purpose of the Position

  • Provide strategic and academic leadership in wholesale and retail sector research
  • Focus areas include:
    • Entrepreneurship
    • Rural and township business transformation
    • Sector skills development
    • Labour market responsiveness

Main Objectives

  • Strengthen research capacity
  • Foster collaboration across the Post-School Education and Training (PSET) system
  • Drive sector-relevant research aligned to the Wholesale and Retail Sector Skills Plan (SSP)
  • Support regional development in the Eastern Cape
  • Address national socio-economic priorities

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and implement research programmes aligned to SSP priorities
  • Focus on entrepreneurship and rural/township economies
  • Facilitate collaboration between:
    • Walter Sisulu University
    • TVET colleges
    • CET colleges
    • Industry stakeholders
  • Support:
    • SMME and cooperative development
    • Township and rural retail economy growth
    • Youth employment initiatives
    • Entrepreneurial development pathways
    • Inclusive economic participation
    • Community development
  • Build and manage multidisciplinary research teams
  • Supervise Master’s and Doctoral students
  • Support research capacity development
  • Assist with curriculum development based on industry needs
  • Develop partnerships with industry, government, and communities
  • Promote research publications and conference participation
  • Support learner tracking systems and sector research databases
  • Promote international research collaborations
  • Mobilise additional research funding

Minimum Requirements

  • Relevant doctoral qualification
  • Strong publication record in accredited journals
  • Experience leading research programmes
  • Experience managing research teams
  • Ability to supervise postgraduate students
  • Stakeholder engagement and partnership experience
  • Knowledge of entrepreneurship and rural/township economic development
  • Ability to secure research funding will be advantageous
  • Strong leadership and communication skills
