About the Programme

The Merchandising Learnership combines classroom-based learning with real workplace experience in retail stores nationwide. Participants will gain hands-on exposure to merchandising practices while developing essential workplace and customer service skills.

This programme is ideal for young individuals who want to enter the retail sector but may not yet have formal work experience. Learners will be guided by experienced mentors while completing structured learning modules aligned with industry standards supported by the Wholesale and Retail Sector Education and Training Authority (W&R SETA).

The learnership focuses on developing practical competencies required in merchandising, stock management, and retail customer interaction.


Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Must be a South African citizen
  • Must be between 19 and 28 years old
  • Must currently be unemployed
  • Must have a clear criminal record
  • Basic numeracy and literacy skills required
  • NQF Level 2: Minimum Grade 10 qualification
  • NQF Level 3: Matric certificate required
  • Excellent command of the English language
  • Must be willing to work retail hours, including weekends and public holidays
  • Must be able to travel to and from assigned retail stores

Candidates must also demonstrate commitment, discipline, and motivation to successfully complete the learnership programme.


Key Duties and Responsibilities
Merchandising Activities
  • Assist with product displays according to merchandising plans and store layouts
  • Ensure shelves are neat, fully stocked, and visually appealing
  • Apply pricing labels and promotional signage correctly
  • Maintain store presentation standards
Inventory and Stock Management
  • Support stock counting and inventory checks
  • Assist with receiving and unpacking merchandise
  • Report damaged, expired, or missing stock
  • Monitor stock levels and notify supervisors of shortages
Customer Service Support
  • Assist customers with product information when required
  • Maintain a professional and helpful attitude in-store
  • Escalate customer concerns to supervisors where necessary
Compliance and Store Standards
  • Follow company policies and operational procedures
  • Maintain hygiene, safety, and housekeeping standards
  • Ensure merchandising standards meet supplier and retailer requirements
Learning and Development
  • Attend classroom training sessions and practical assessments
  • Complete required learning modules and assignments
  • Maintain a portfolio of evidence for assessment purposes

Reporting Responsibilities
  • Provide feedback on stock availability and merchandising performance
