About the Role
The Casual Worker position focuses on general orchard work, maintenance of research areas, and assisting with routine field tasks under the guidance of a supervisor. The position plays an important role in supporting ARC’s ongoing field trials, orchard development, and research projects designed to improve agricultural productivity in South Africa.
Casual Workers help ensure that orchard activities are carried out safely, accurately, and on schedule. These tasks directly support the success of research studies, which in turn contribute to national food security and agricultural innovation.
Key Responsibilities
Successful applicants will perform a variety of practical and manual tasks, including:
1. General Orchard Tasks
- Assisting with daily orchard maintenance and farm activities.
- Supporting planting, weeding, irrigation, and orchard cleaning tasks.
- Handling fruit thinning, pruning, and other basic crop-care duties as directed.
2. General Orchard Maintenance
- Maintaining the cleanliness and orderliness of orchards and field trial areas.
- Ensuring tools, equipment, and working spaces are kept in safe, usable condition.
3. Protecting Field Trials from Animal Interference
- Assisting with barriers, nets, or protective structures to safeguard trial plants.
- Monitoring orchard areas and reporting any disruptions or damage immediately.
4. Manual Labour & Tool Handling
- Performing manual tasks instructed by supervisors.
- Proper handling, safe use, and basic maintenance of farm tools and equipment.
5. Compliance with Occupational Health & Safety Rules
- Strict adherence to OHS protocols and safety instructions.
- Ensuring safe work practices, especially during physical or equipment-related tasks.
- Reporting hazards or risks to supervisors promptly.
Minimum Requirements
To qualify for these Casual Worker positions, applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:
- Grade 10 or equivalent qualification.
- Basic understanding of agricultural practices.
- Fundamental knowledge of manually operating farm tools and machinery.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Reasonable knowledge of health and safety procedures.
- Willingness to work outdoors, including under adverse weather conditions.
