About the Academy

The Secretarial Academy was founded with the aim of providing practical, high-quality training to previously disadvantaged individuals. The academy is accredited by the Services SETA (registration number 12842) and offers the Further Education and Training Certificate in Business Administration Services qualification (SAQA ID 61595 LP 35928) at NQF Level 4.

Since its inception, the academy has remained committed to producing highly skilled secretarial professionals who are immediately employable upon completing the course. Every year, only eight to ten candidates are selected for this intensive programme through a competitive selection process that includes computer, typing, and linguistic proficiency tests.


Programme Overview
  • Course Duration: 1 March – 28 February (12 months)
  • Mid-Year Exam: Conducted halfway through the programme
  • Final Exam: At the end of February
  • Training Areas: Patents, Trade Marks, Commercial, and Conveyancing

The course is divided into two phases designed to build both technical and professional competencies.

Phase I (First 5–6 Months):
Focuses on foundational skills such as typing, keyboarding, basic computer literacy, and understanding the professional work environment. Trainees receive an introduction to the legal field and corporate office practices.

Phase II (Advanced Stage):
Only trainees who demonstrate exceptional performance in Phase I will proceed. This stage includes advanced audio typing, spreadsheets, presentations, and professional correspondence writing. It also emphasizes initiative, accuracy, time management, and the ability to handle real-world administrative responsibilities.


Key Course Components

The Secretarial Trainee Programme provides both academic instruction and practical workplace exposure. Core training areas include:

  • Computyping: Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint proficiency.
  • Typing Speed: Target – 60 words per minute (wpm).
  • Audio Typing and Transcription.
  • Basic Accounting Principles.
  • Legal Theory and Practice Exposure.
  • Written and Spoken English for Business.
  • Professional Image and Grooming.
  • Telephone Etiquette and Client Communication.
  • Time Management and Organisational Skills.
  • Financial Planning and Life Skills.
  • Practical Secretarial and Administrative Training.

In addition, participants will complete modules aligned with the Business Administration Services Qualification (Learnership) framework:

  1. Administration Processes
  2. Information and Communication
  3. Work in an Office Environment
  4. Problem Solving and Administrative Support
  5. Teamwork and Collaboration

Candidate Requirements

To qualify for the Secretarial Trainee Programme, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Age: Between 18 and 26 years.
  • Education:
    • A Matric Certificate including Computer Applications Technology (CAT); or
    • A post-matric qualification with Typing/Keyboarding and MS Office proficiency (minimum 25 wpm).
  • Advantageous: N6 Legal Secretary Diploma.
  • Language Skills: Fluency in English – both written and spoken. A C symbol (60 % – 69 %) or higher for English is beneficial.
  • Personal Qualities:
    • Strong desire to learn and work hard.
    • Professional presentation and punctuality.
    • Enthusiasm for administrative and secretarial work.
