The Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services (JICS) is inviting applications from suitably qualified South African citizens for Independent Correctional Centre Visitor (ICCV) positions at various correctional facilities across the country.

This opportunity is suitable for individuals who are passionate about human rights, accountability, public service, and supporting transparency within South Africa’s correctional system.

Successful candidates will be appointed on a fixed-term contract and will assist with monitoring inmate complaints, reporting concerns, and promoting fair treatment within correctional centres.

About JICS

The Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services (JICS) is an independent oversight body responsible for monitoring conditions within correctional facilities and ensuring that the rights of inmates are protected in accordance with South African law.

Independent Correctional Centre Visitors play a key role in helping JICS carry out its mandate by engaging directly with inmates and correctional officials and reporting concerns related to conditions of detention.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must possess:

  • Grade 12 (Matric) or Senior Certificate
  • Computer literacy
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to work effectively within a team
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Knowledge of Batho Pele Principles
Additional Requirement

Applicants must attach a recommendation or nomination as an Independent Correctional Centre Visitor from a recognised community organisation.

The recommendation must:

  • Be no older than six months
  • Accompany the application submission
Advantageous Requirements

The following will serve as an advantage:

  • Valid driver’s licence
  • Residence close to the correctional facility where the vacancy exists

Preference may be given to applicants living within the surrounding communities of the advertised centres.

Key Responsibilities

Successful candidates may be required to:

Monitoring and Reporting
  • Visit correctional facilities regularly
  • Monitor conditions within correctional centres
  • Observe and report matters affecting inmate welfare
Complaint Resolution Support
  • Engage with inmates regarding complaints and concerns
  • Liaise with Department of Correctional Services officials where necessary
  • Assist with the handling and reporting of inmate complaints
Oversight Activities
  • Monitor incidents involving:
    • Deaths in custody
    • Segregation practices
    • Mechanical restraints
    • Use of force incidents
Administrative Duties
  • Compile reports and documentation
  • Maintain accurate records
  • Support inspection and investigation activities
  • Perform general administrative tasks related to the role
