Job Overview
RCL Foods is currently recruiting a motivated and customer-focused Code 10 Driver Salesman to join its Baking Business Unit based in the Empangeni area.
This permanent position combines driving, delivery, and sales responsibilities, requiring candidates to transport bread and confectionery products while maintaining strong relationships with customers. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering products, taking orders, handling cash transactions, and identifying opportunities to grow sales within allocated routes.
The role reports directly to the Distribution Manager and plays a key role in ensuring reliable product availability to traders, retail outlets, and chain stores.
Key Responsibilities
Transportation and Delivery Duties

Deliver bread and confectionery products safely to customers
- Ensure deliveries match customer orders accurately
- Load and offload stock when required
- Maintain delivery schedules and route efficiency
- Ensure all crates delivered are recovered and returned daily
- Transport goods, materials, or personnel when required
Drivers are expected to comply fully with road safety regulations and company transport procedures.
Vehicle Management and Safety
The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining company vehicle standards, including:
- Keeping the vehicle clean and hygienic at all times
- Conducting daily vehicle inspections using company checklists
- Reporting mechanical faults immediately
- Ensuring safe loading practices to maintain road safety
- Wearing prescribed Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Reporting accidents, theft, or damages according to company procedures
Compliance with Occupational Health and Safety standards is mandatory.
Stock Control and Loading
- Verify stock quantities before departure
- Ensure loaded stock corresponds with delivery documentation
- Report damaged or substandard products
- Monitor crate quantities and returns
- Assist warehouse teams with loading when necessary
Attention to detail is essential to prevent stock discrepancies and losses.
Sales and Customer Service
This role includes a strong sales component. Responsibilities include:
- Calling on existing customers and maintaining relationships
- Identifying opportunities to increase daily sales
- Acquiring new customers along delivery routes
- Promoting company products and special offers
- Handling customer enquiries professionally
- Reporting potential customer losses or service challenges
Drivers act as brand ambassadors and must maintain excellent customer service standards.
Cash Handling and Administration
Drivers will also manage transactional duties such as:
- Safeguarding company cash and documentation
- Depositing received payments into vehicle safes immediately
- Completing invoices, delivery notes, and route documentation
- Performing accurate daily cash-ups with supervisors
- Monitoring counterfeit or fraudulent transactions
- Ensuring stock sold balances with cash received
Accuracy and honesty are critical in managing financial transactions.
Team Supervision
The Code 10 Driver will supervise Van Assistants by:
- Ensuring attendance and readiness for daily operations
- Coaching assistants on customer service standards
- Promoting teamwork and professionalism
- Reporting performance concerns to management
Strong leadership and communication skills are required.
Minimum Requirements
Education
- Grade 12 / Matric Certificate
- Valid Code 10 Driver’s Licence
- Valid Professional Driving Permit (PDP)
Experience
- Minimum of 2 years driving experience within an FMCG environment
- Experience delivering and selling products directly to customers
- Cash handling and route sales experience advantageous
