Job Summary

The General Worker will be responsible for assisting artisans and technical staff while performing basic maintenance duties within office facilities and at remote meteorological observation sites.

This role is critical to ensuring that weather monitoring infrastructure remains functional, clean, safe, and well-maintained. The successful candidate will contribute directly to the smooth operation of SAWS facilities and services in the region.


Key Performance Areas and Responsibilities

The General Worker will perform a variety of support and maintenance tasks, including but not limited to:

🔧 Technical and Maintenance Support
  • Assisting with the installation and inspection of remote observation sites
  • Repairing structures that house meteorological equipment such as masts, stands, and support systems
  • Performing rudimentary building maintenance where required
🌿 Terrain and Environmental Maintenance
  • Weeding, mowing lawns, and maintaining surrounding grounds
  • Removing litter and general waste from observation sites and office premises
  • Ensuring facilities remain clean, safe, and presentable
🧹 Office Cleaning and Upkeep
  • Cleaning indoor office spaces including restrooms when required
  • Supporting overall hygiene and workplace standards
📦 Asset and Fleet Support
  • Monitoring and reporting on assets and infrastructure
  • Assisting with fleet management activities
  • Maintaining appropriate stock levels for maintenance tasks
📋 Compliance and Safety
  • Adhering to Occupational Health and Safety regulations
  • Participating in Total Quality Management (TQM) processes
  • Attending training as instructed
🤝 Additional Support Duties
  • Assisting staff during exhibitions, presentations, workshops, and public outreach events
  • Supporting school visits and awareness initiatives
  • Sharing skills and knowledge within the organisation
  • Participating in mentoring and learning programmes

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

🎓 Education:

  • Matric / Grade 12 or NQF Level 2 qualification

🚗 Driver’s Licence:

  • Valid South African driver’s licence (essential)

🛠 Added Advantage:

  • Welding skills
  • General handyman or maintenance courses
