Introduction

Dis-Chem Pharmacies, one of South Africa’s leading retail pharmacy groups, is offering an opportunity for dedicated, disciplined, and observant Security Guards to join its Pretoria operations. The successful candidates will help ensure the safety of customers, employees, and company assets by upholding all security protocols in accordance with the Private Security Industry Regulations Act 56 of 2001.

Role Purpose

The Security Guard will play a critical role in protecting Dis-Chem stores, warehouses, and surrounding premises from security breaches, theft, vandalism, and potential threats. By maintaining visibility, conducting patrols, monitoring access points, and ensuring compliance with safety standards, the Security Guard contributes to a safe shopping environment and supports overall operational stability.

This role requires awareness, quick decision-making, good communication, and strong adherence to legal and organisational procedures.


Minimum Requirements
Essential Requirements
  • Grade 12 / Matric certificate or Senior Certificate
  • PSIRA Grade C accreditation
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience working in retail environments such as malls, warehouses, or similar high-traffic settings
Advantageous
  • At least 1 year of direct experience working as a security guard in a similar role
  • Ability to speak a third language

Key Responsibilities

Security Guards will be required to maintain professionalism, vigilance, and visibility at all times. Duties include:

1. Surveillance and Patrols
  • Conduct routine and random patrols throughout the premises to ensure visibility and minimise security risks.
  • Identify suspicious behaviour or potential security threats and act according to company policy.
  • Investigate any signs of disturbance, damage, or unlawful entry and report findings immediately.
2. Access Control
  • Monitor and regulate entry of staff, customers, vehicles, and suppliers.
  • Ensure only authorised individuals gain access to restricted areas.
  • Perform personnel searches and inspections of bags, containers, and merchandise according to Dis-Chem standards.
3. Protection of Assets
  • Protect company property, stock, equipment, and infrastructure from theft, damage, and criminal activity.
  • Supervise refuse removal procedures to prevent theft or unauthorised removal of items.
  • Cancel employee purchaser slips and ensure goods are properly declared.
4. Incident and Crisis Management
  • Report suspicious activities or unusual behaviour immediately.
  • Respond promptly during emergencies such as fires, evacuations, or criminal incidents.
  • Contact police, emergency services, or management whenever required.
  • Provide accurate, detailed written reports on incidents, observations, or investigations.
5. Operational Responsibilities
  • Maintain occurrence books, visitor registers, and all relevant documents.
  • Monitor alarms, surveillance cameras, and emergency detection equipment.
  • Ensure all doors, windows, and taps are secured during opening and closing procedures.
  • Conduct vehicle searches and daily staff frisking as per company regulations.
6. Customer Interaction
  • Remain courteous, approachable, and professional when interacting with customers, employees, and visitors.
  • Provide clear instructions during emergencies or operational disruptions to maintain order and safety.

Essential Skills
  • Strong understanding of PSIRA regulations
  • Knowledge of fire safety procedures and health & safety principles
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English
  • High level of alertness and awareness
  • Ability to act quickly, accurately interpret situations, and respond appropriately
Beneficial Skills
  • Additional language(s)
  • Previous training in emergency response

Conditions of Employment
  • Must be PSIRA-registered with Grade C certification
  • South African citizenship required
  • Clear criminal and credit record
  • Driver’s license and PDP advantageous for posts requiring driving
  • Must be medically fit for duty
