The South African Revenue Service (SARS) is looking for dynamic and highly motivated Legal Debt Collectors to join its Debt Management Division on a fixed-term contract. If you are experienced in tax debt recovery, passionate about public service, and eager to contribute to South Africa’s financial integrity, this opportunity is for you.

SARS is committed to excellence in service delivery and seeks professionals who can manage, execute, and oversee debt recovery processes, including legal enforcement actions such as final demands, court judgments, liens, and personal liability cases.

Successful candidates will operate at a national level and contribute to making non-compliance with tax obligations both difficult and costly, thereby supporting SARS’s mandate to ensure fiscal sustainability and tax justice.


πŸŽ“ Minimum Qualifications and Experience

To be eligible, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • National Diploma / Advanced Certificate (NQF Level 6) in Credit Management, Legal Studies, Finance, or related field.
  • Solid working knowledge of legal collections, including:
    • Final Demand Procedures
    • Court Judgments
    • Warrants of Execution
    • Placement of Liens
    • Business Rescue Processes
    • Personal Liability and Interpleader Notices
  • Experience with interpretation of financial statements and legal recovery procedures is essential.
  • Completion of legal articles would be advantageous.

🧾 Key Responsibilities

As a Legal Debt Collector, you will be responsible for:

πŸ“Œ Debt Recovery & Legal Processes
  • Conduct taxpayer risk assessments and determine collectability of debts.
  • Recommend and execute enforcement actions under relevant legislation (e.g., Tax Administration Act, Companies Act).
  • Compile reports and present debt recovery cases to internal committees.
  • Profile, analyse, and motivate for write-offs, deferrals, or compromise settlements.
  • Monitor and enforce payment compliance on agreed terms.
  • Conduct physical asset verification for collection purposes.

  • Participate in legal actions including sequestrations, liquidations, and enforcement procedures.
  • Collate documentation and support court applications and proceedings.
  • Attend creditors’ meetings, court sessions, tax enquiries, and other official engagements.

  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders, including legal entities and financial institutions.
  • Collaborate with audit and investigation teams on high-risk debt collection projects.

  • Identify offshore taxpayer assets and refer cases for international collection.
