South African National Parks (SANParks), in partnership with the Department of Tourism, invites unemployed youth to apply for a limited number of Tourism Monitor positions for the 2025/26 intake. This 7-month work opportunity is part of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) and aims to enhance visitor safety and service delivery at national parks and key tourist attractions across the country.
About the Programme
The Tourism Monitors Programme is a skills development and work experience initiative that supports:
- Youth employment and local economic development
- Tourism safety and awareness in national parks and attractions
- Environmental conservation and visitor services
Successful candidates will be deployed at various SANParks sites where they will perform practical work, engage with tourists, support safety efforts, and receive theoretical training in relevant areas such as customer service, conservation, and tourism operations.

Who Should Apply?
This opportunity is ideal for unemployed South African youth who are passionate about tourism, nature, and service. You should apply if you:
- Are between the ages of 18 and 35
- Are a South African citizen with a valid ID
- Have completed Matric / Grade 12
- Live within 40 to 100 km of a SANParks site (proof of residence required)
- Are fluent in English and possess basic communication skills
- Are physically fit, willing to work outdoors, and flexible with working hours (including weekends and public holidays)
- Have a good attitude, are eager to learn, and can follow instructions

Key Responsibilities
As a Tourism Monitor, you will:
- Help ensure visitor safety by patrolling key areas and reporting any unusual or risky activity
- Provide basic tourism information and assist tourists with orientation, directions, and frequently asked questions
- Assist park officials in monitoring visitor conduct to ensure environmental rules are respected
- Participate in training sessions and practical learning activities
- Support SANParks staff in daily operations such as gate duties, trail monitoring, and guest relations
- Report and record observations, safety concerns, and incidents

- Proof of residence (no older than 3 months – e.g. municipal bill or letter from a councillor; no affidavits)

- Only one applicant per household may be considered.
- Shortlisted candidates may be required to undergo interviews, fitness assessments, and criminal background checks.
