Purpose of Job
To participate in and complete the Learnership programme for designated field of expertise.
Learnerships are learning programmes that require on the job learning supported by structured or institutional learning.
You can take up a learnership in the following field:
- Fire Fighting
Key Accountabilities
- Participate in Learnership programme and successfully complete the assessment process;
- Participate in all required work-place readiness activities and exercises.
Formal Education
A completed National Senior Certificate or equivalent with a pass in:
- Technical Mathematics/Mathematics
- English/Business English
- Technical/Physical Science
- Code B or higher drivers Licence
- Ability to pass a stress and fear assessment (Hights, Confined space and Fire exposure)
- Pass Fire fighter fitness assessment

Responsibilities and duties for a Sasol Fire Fighter Learnership. These are typically aligned with the training outcomes, workplace exposure, and operational support learners are expected to undertake:
Sasol Fire Fighter Learnership: Duties and Responsibilities
1. Fire Prevention and Safety
- Assist in conducting routine fire risk assessments in operational areas.
- Support the inspection and maintenance of firefighting equipment (hydrants, extinguishers, hoses, alarms).
- Participate in fire prevention awareness and safety campaigns within the workplace.
- Identify and report potential fire hazards to supervisors.
2. Firefighting Operations
- Respond promptly to fire alarms, emergency calls, and rescue situations under supervision.
- Assist with setting up firefighting equipment and preparing water sources.
- Participate in controlled fire suppression activities (using extinguishers, foam, hoses, breathing apparatus).
- Work as part of a team to control and extinguish fires safely and effectively.
3. Emergency Response and Rescue
- Provide support during emergency incidents such as explosions, chemical spills, or accidents.
- Assist in basic rescue operations, including extricating trapped individuals.
- Render basic first aid until professional medical personnel arrive.
4. Training and Development
- Attend theoretical and practical firefighting and safety training sessions.
- Participate in drills, simulations, and scenario-based training to build skills.
- Learn to operate specialized firefighting equipment and protective gear.
- Maintain physical fitness and readiness for emergency response.
5. Administration and Reporting
- Keep accurate records of incidents, inspections, and training activities.
- Complete logbooks and progress reports as required by the learnership programme.
- Assist with compiling post-incident and fire investigation documentation.
6. Compliance and Teamwork
- Follow Sasol’s safety, health, environmental, and quality (SHEQ) standards at all times.
- Work under supervision of senior firefighters and safety officers.
- Collaborate effectively with fire team members and other emergency services.
- Uphold discipline, punctuality, and responsibility in all duties.
This programme is designed to give learners practical workplace exposure, build core firefighting competencies, and prepare them for a permanent role in firefighting, emergency response, or safety departments.
