About the Role
The Technical General Worker will support the maintenance and upkeep of the Shingwedzi Research Camp. This includes assisting with landscaping, general repairs, cleaning, and ensuring that facilities and infrastructure are kept in good working condition.
The role requires a hands-on individual who is comfortable working outdoors and can perform physically demanding tasks. The successful candidate will also assist with maintaining a safe and clean environment for staff and visitors.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Grade 12 (Matric) certificate or equivalent
- 1–2 years of practical experience in a maintenance-related field
- Brush cutter certificate or competency
- Valid driver’s licence
- Ability to speak, read, and write English
- Basic knowledge of machinery operation
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act
Additional Advantages
The following will be considered beneficial but are not mandatory:
- First Aid Level 1 certification
- Experience in general maintenance across multiple trades (electrical, plumbing, carpentry, etc.)
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for a wide range of duties, including:
Maintenance and Landscaping
- Maintain camp terrain, gardens, and surrounding areas
- Perform brush cutting and basic landscaping tasks
- Ensure all outdoor areas are clean and well-kept
General Maintenance Work
- Carry out routine maintenance on buildings, fences, roads, and infrastructure
- Perform minor repairs, including electrical, plumbing, welding, and carpentry tasks within skill level
- Conduct general painting and upkeep of facilities
Cleaning and Housekeeping
- Clean communal areas, including fireplaces, braais, and surrounding spaces
- Remove rubbish and maintain cleanliness throughout the camp
- Assist with cleaning accommodations when required
Equipment and Tools Management
- Clean and maintain vehicles, tools, and machinery
- Ensure all equipment is in good working condition
- Report faults or damage to the camp supervisor
Support and Administrative Duties
- Assist with stock and inventory counting
- Help with collection and transportation of supplies
- Record and report maintenance issues
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the camp supervisor
Physical and Work Requirements
This role requires a high level of physical fitness. The successful candidate must be able to:
- Lift and carry heavy objects
- Bend, stand, and work for extended periods
- Perform outdoor tasks in various weather conditions
The position may also require working on weekends and public holidays, depending on operational needs.
