Learnership Programme Overview

The Horticulture Learnership Programme (NQF Level 2) offers unemployed young South Africans an opportunity to gain practical and theoretical experience in plant production, landscaping, and horticultural site maintenance.

This programme blends classroom learning with hands-on workplace exposure, allowing learners to develop foundational skills in plant care, soil preparation, irrigation systems, and environmental management. Successful participants will gain industry-relevant experience that can lead to further studies or employment within horticulture, agriculture, landscaping, and environmental services.


Key Responsibilities and Practical Training Areas

Learners selected for this programme will be actively involved in daily horticultural operations, including:

  • Assisting with the operation and maintenance of horticultural sites and plant production areas
  • Monitoring plant growth, health, and environmental conditions
  • Preparing soil and planting various plant species
  • Supporting irrigation system upkeep and water management
  • Maintaining gardening tools and equipment
  • Participating in plant propagation, watering, and fertilising activities
  • Attending structured training classes as part of the learnership
  • Engaging in group discussions and hands-on demonstrations
  • Completing written assignments and practical projects
  • Maintaining a logbook to track skills development and progress

Minimum Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet all the following conditions:

  • Must be unemployed
  • Must not be enrolled at any educational institution or registered in another learnership
  • Must not hold a completed post-matric qualification
  • Must have Grade 12 (Matric) with Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy and Life Science at minimum Level 3
  • Must be a South African citizen with a valid ID document
  • Must be between 18 and 35 years of age
  • Must submit a SAQA/NLRD verification report

Failure to disclose post-matric qualifications will result in immediate disqualification.
