Job Overview
SFI Group (Pty) Ltd is looking for a skilled and qualified HVAC Technician to join its team in Umhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal. The successful candidate will be responsible for servicing, maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing air-conditioning and refrigeration systems across various client sites.
This is a hands-on technical position suited to an experienced HVAC professional who has strong knowledge of commercial refrigeration and air-conditioning systems. The role involves working with equipment such as chilled water systems, single- and three-phase motors, VRV/VRF systems, split units, DX systems, refrigeration systems and air handling units.
The technician will be expected to deliver reliable technical services while maintaining high standards of safety, documentation and customer service. The role also includes preventative maintenance, minor installations, client communication and assisting with the development of junior technicians.
Candidates must have a mandatory Red Seal Commercial Airconditioning Trade Qualification and a valid driver’s licence with at least three years of driving experience.
Key Responsibilities
The HVAC Technician will be responsible for:
- Diagnosing and troubleshooting HVAC and refrigeration systems.
- Performing preventative maintenance, servicing and repairs.
- Working on commercial refrigeration systems, cold rooms, package units and split systems.
- Performing minor installations, including split-unit installations and small system modifications.
- Inspecting equipment and ensuring compliance with health and safety requirements.
- Following applicable OSHA and workplace safety standards.
- Maintaining accurate service records and technical documentation.
- Communicating professionally with clients and providing updates on work being completed.
- Ensuring service delivery meets required technical and customer service standards.
- Working independently as well as within a technical team.
- Assisting with mentoring junior technicians and supporting skills development.
- Working across multiple projects and client portfolios.
- Participating in emergency call-outs, extended working hours and weekend shifts when required.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants should meet the following requirements:
- Red Seal Commercial Airconditioning Trade Qualification – Mandatory.
- 3–5 years of hands-on HVAC and refrigeration experience after obtaining a trade qualification.
- Valid driver’s licence – Mandatory.
- At least 3 years of driving experience.
- Strong experience with commercial refrigeration systems.
- Experience with chilled water systems.
- Knowledge of single-phase and three-phase motors.
- Experience with VRV/VRF systems.
- Experience with split units and DX systems.
- Knowledge of refrigeration systems and air handling units.
- Ability to work across multiple projects or portfolios.
A Safe Handling Practitioner Certificate is listed as optional. Experience overseeing small teams is also advantageous.
Technical Skills and Knowledge
The successful candidate should have strong HVAC and refrigeration troubleshooting skills and a solid understanding of how different systems operate.
