Job Overview
Astral has an opportunity available for a high-calibre Ultra-Heavy Motor Vehicle Driver in Midrand, Gauteng. The successful candidate will be responsible for transporting and distributing goods to various clients while ensuring that all driving, loading, offloading, vehicle inspection, safety, and documentation requirements are followed.
This position is suited to an experienced heavy vehicle driver who has a strong understanding of safe vehicle operation and can work responsibly in a demanding transport environment. The driver will be responsible for preparing the vehicle for trips, transporting goods safely, ensuring loads are properly secured, and overseeing or completing the offloading process.
The role requires a strong commitment to road safety and compliance with company procedures and the National Road Traffic Act. Drivers must be able to identify and report vehicle defects or emergencies, conduct appropriate vehicle inspections, and operate vehicles efficiently to maximize cost-effectiveness.
The successful candidate must also be comfortable dealing professionally with customers and working flexible shifts, including weekends and public holidays. Applicants from outside Gauteng may consider this opportunity if they are willing and able to relocate to Midrand.
Key Responsibilities
The Ultra-Heavy Motor Vehicle Driver will be responsible for:
- Preparing vehicles for scheduled trips and operating ultra-heavy-duty vehicles.
- Loading, transporting, and offloading goods safely and efficiently.
- Ensuring loads are properly secured before departure.
- Ensuring vehicles are not overloaded in accordance with the National Road Traffic Act.
- Operating offloading equipment or supervising the offloading process where required.
- Opening and closing tarpaulins where applicable.
- Completing and handling required transport documentation.
- Conducting vehicle inspections and reporting defects or emergencies according to procedure.
- Using defensive driving techniques and maintaining safe driving practices.
- Understanding the function and location of vehicle components.
- Operating a fire extinguisher when required.
- Maximizing vehicle cost-effectiveness and operational efficiency.
- Dealing with customers in a professional and efficient manner.
- Maintaining good housekeeping of the vehicle, uniform, and PPE.
- Following company SOPs, safety procedures, and supervisor instructions.
- Performing other reasonable duties as instructed by the Supervisor.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must have:
- Grade 12 / Matric / Senior Certificate
- At least Grade 10 literacy level, including verbal and numerical literacy
- A valid Code EC driver’s licence
- A valid PrDP (DGP)
- Minimum 3 years’ experience driving an ultra-heavy vehicle
- Must be 25 years or older
- A safe driving record
- A clean criminal record
- Ability and willingness to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays
