Job Overview
Dis-Chem Pharmacies is looking for an experienced Casual Cashier to join its Cornubia store in Umhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal. This is a part-time retail opportunity suited to a customer-focused individual with previous cashier or till-operation experience.
The successful candidate will support customers at the point of sale while helping provide a professional and positive shopping experience. The position involves accurately recording customer transactions on the Dis-Chem operating system and following company policies and standard operating procedures.
Accuracy is particularly important in this role. The Cashier will be responsible for processing different types of payments, managing cash, handling refunds and authorised exchanges, processing loyalty cards and ensuring that all transactions are completed correctly. The position also requires candidates to follow strict security and cash-handling procedures designed to minimise errors, losses and fraud risks.
In addition to operating the till, the Cashier will interact directly with customers, answer merchandise-related queries, remain informed about current promotions and report customer feedback to supervisors or store management. Candidates should therefore be confident communicators who can remain professional in a busy retail environment.
Applicants must have Grade 12/Matric and at least 6 months of cashier or till-operation experience. Computer literacy, sound numerical skills and a strong command of English are also required.
The position requires flexibility, as the successful candidate must be willing and able to work retail hours. Reliable transport and/or residence close to the store is also a condition of employment.
Key Responsibilities
The Casual Cashier will be responsible for:
- Processing customer purchases accurately and efficiently.
- Receiving and processing cash, bank cards, vouchers, coupons and other accepted payments.
- Managing cash flow and maintaining the cash drawer securely.
- Ensuring cash is placed into the drop safe according to Dis-Chem procedures.
- Processing authorised refunds and merchandise exchanges.
- Processing Dis-Chem ClubCard and participating partner loyalty cards.
- Ensuring all outgoing stock, items and scripts are scanned and paid for.
- Ensuring line voids and price changes are properly authorised.
- Keeping till codes and passwords secure and restricted to the authorised user.
- Handling daily takings confidentially.
- Staying aware of current sales and promotions.
- Assisting customers with merchandise-related queries.
- Establishing professional relationships with customers.
- Reporting customer complaints and compliments to the relevant supervisor or management.
- Recognising and reporting suspicious behaviour.
- Following Dis-Chem customer-service and security procedures.
- Ensuring customers and colleagues are not unnecessarily exposed to safety risks.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must have:
- Grade 12 / Matric.
- At least 6 months’ cashier or till-operation experience.
- Computer literacy, including MS Office.
- Sound numerical skills.
- Strong written and spoken English.
- Basic customer-service skills.
- Willingness and ability to work retail hours.
- South African citizenship.
- Clear credit and criminal records.
- Reliable transport and/or residence reasonably close to the store.
An additional third language will be advantageous.
