Minimum Qualifications and Requirements

Applicants must meet one of the following educational requirements:

• Standard 10 / Grade 12 with Mathematics and Physical Science, OR
• N3 Technical Engineering qualification in one of the following fields:
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Metering, Control & Instrumentation

Applicants must also:

• Pass a competency assessment covering technical ability, numerical, verbal, and abstract reasoning
• Have a good command of the English language
• Have a valid Code 08–10 driver’s licence
• Demonstrate good analytical and problem-solving abilities
• Have strong attention to detail
• Be able to work independently
• Be able to remain composed when working under pressure

Training and Key Responsibilities

The Trainee Controller will be trained to support the safe and efficient movement of petroleum products through the pipeline network. Training will include operating specialised equipment according to scheduled programmes and instructions while considering product volume, quality, safety, company assets, and customer requirements.

The trainee will learn about risk and pollution control, including monitoring depot risk status, reporting and documenting information, detecting leaks and spillages, monitoring separator tanks, draining water from bund areas, and handling transmixtures and intermixtures.

The role will also involve learning how to use company operational systems and software to control pipeline equipment. Trainees will extract, capture, verify, and prioritise information according to company procedures.

Training will include planning and handling blending, tanker loading, and transmixture/intermixture operations. Trainees will also receive exposure to minor scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, including testing, lubrication, and basic repairs.

Another important area of training will involve the launching and receiving of Pigs and Spheres used within pipeline operations. Trainees will learn the correct procedures for isolating, draining, opening, and launching equipment according to company policies and safety procedures.

The Trainee Controller will also be trained in product metering, monitoring metering equipment, capturing operational information, and checking product measurement systems.

Additional responsibilities include learning how to perform and monitor pipeline shutdowns, respond to substandard conditions, implement corrective actions, and capture relevant operational information.

Trainees will also receive training in product quality testing, using approved testing equipment and software to monitor pipeline equipment and product movement and record relevant results.
