This is a permanent driving opportunity based in Pretoria West, Gauteng, suited to an experienced heavy vehicle driver who is confident operating ultra-heavy vehicles and understands the importance of safe, compliant and efficient transportation.

The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing and operating ultra-heavy duty vehicles, loading and transporting goods, overseeing or carrying out offloading activities, securing loads and completing the required trip and delivery documentation. Drivers will also be expected to maintain their vehicles, uniform and PPE in good condition and consistently follow company safety procedures and standard operating procedures.

Experience with dry bulk tankers is specifically required, making this role particularly relevant to drivers with tanker and bulk-transport experience. Applicants must also have a Code EC driver’s licence with a valid PrDP (DGP) and at least three years’ experience driving ultra-heavy vehicles.

The role requires flexibility, as the successful candidate must be prepared to work shifts, weekends and public holidays when required.

Key Responsibilities

The Ultra-heavy Motor Vehicle Driver will be responsible for:

  • Preparing the vehicle for each trip and operating ultra-heavy duty vehicles safely.
  • Loading, transporting and offloading goods.
  • Ensuring loads are properly secured before departure.
  • Making sure the vehicle is not overloaded in accordance with the National Road Traffic Act.
  • Operating offloading equipment where required or overseeing the offloading process.
  • Opening and closing tarpaulins where applicable.
  • Completing required trip, delivery and other vehicle documentation.
  • Carrying out vehicle inspections and reporting defects or emergencies according to procedure.
  • Maintaining good housekeeping of the vehicle, uniform and PPE.
  • Following all company SOPs, safety procedures and supervisor instructions.
  • Dealing with customers professionally and efficiently.
  • Maximising vehicle cost-effectiveness and operational efficiency.
  • Performing other reasonable duties as instructed by the Supervisor.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants should meet the following requirements:

  • Grade 10 literacy level, with verbal and numerical literacy.
  • Code EC driver’s licence.
  • Valid PrDP (DGP).
  • At least 3 years’ experience driving ultra-heavy vehicles.
  • Experience with dry bulk tankers.
  • Must be 25 years or older.
  • Defensive driving knowledge and techniques.
  • Knowledge of vehicle components and their functions.
  • Understanding of emergency and vehicle-defect reporting procedures.
  • Knowledge of vehicle inspections and fire-extinguisher operation.
  • Knowledge of vehicle loading techniques.
  • Ability to maximise vehicle efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
  • Willingness to work shifts, weekends and public holidays.
  • Safe driving record and clean criminal record.

Assessments and Compliance

Successful applicants will be required to successfully complete or undergo the relevant company processes, including:

  • Medical evaluation.
  • USCS training modules.
  • Company induction processes.
  • Practical driving evaluation.
  • Verification of a clean criminal record.

These requirements are important because the position involves operating heavy vehicles, transporting goods and working within strict road-safety and workplace-safety requirements.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will be an experienced, responsible and safety-conscious ultra-heavy vehicle driver who can operate independently while following company procedures. Attention to detail is essential when inspecting vehicles, securing loads, completing documentation and ensuring that vehicles remain within legal weight limits.

Strong customer-service skills are also important, as drivers will interact directly with customers during deliveries and offloading.
