About the Opportunity
Astral – Festive has an opportunity available for a high-calibre Ultra-heavy Motor Vehicle Driver to distribute goods to various clients.
The successful candidate will be responsible for safely preparing, operating, loading, transporting and offloading goods using ultra-heavy-duty vehicles. The role requires an experienced professional driver who understands vehicle safety, load management, road regulations and customer service.
This is a permanent position based in Midrand, Gauteng. For candidates in Durban and elsewhere in KwaZulu-Natal, the opportunity is suitable for those who are willing to relocate to Midrand.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Grade 12 / Matric / Senior Certificate.
- Applicants must be 25 years or older.
- Code EC driver’s licence.
- Valid PrDP (DGP).
- Minimum 3 years’ experience driving an Ultra-heavy Vehicle.
- Must have a safe driving record.
- Must have a clean criminal record.
- Must be prepared to work shifts, weekends and public holidays.
- Must be able to communicate verbally and demonstrate basic numerical literacy.
- Knowledge of defensive driving techniques.
- Understanding of vehicle components and their functions.
- Knowledge of emergency and vehicle-defect reporting procedures.
- Understanding of vehicle inspection procedures.
- Ability to operate a fire extinguisher.
- Knowledge of vehicle loading techniques.
- Understanding of ways to maximise vehicle cost-effectiveness and efficiency.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
The Ultra-heavy Motor Vehicle Driver will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the assigned vehicle.
Vehicle Operations and Transportation
Duties include:
- Preparing the vehicle for each trip.
- Operating ultra-heavy-duty vehicles safely.
- Loading, transporting and offloading goods.
- Ensuring the vehicle is not overloaded in accordance with the National Road Traffic Act.
- Ensuring loads are properly secured before departure.
- Opening and closing tarpaulins where applicable.
- Operating offloading equipment where required or overseeing the offloading process.
- Taking responsibility for goods throughout the transportation and offloading process.
Documentation and Administration
The successful candidate will also be expected to:
- Complete and handle required documentation.
- Perform relevant ancillary duties.
- Follow reasonable instructions provided by the Supervisor.
- Adhere to all applicable standard operating procedures and safety requirements.
Customer Service
The driver will interact directly with customers during deliveries and must therefore:
- Deal with customers in a professional and efficient manner.
- Maintain positive working relationships with clients.
- Ensure goods are delivered and offloaded according to operational requirements.
Safety, Housekeeping and Compliance
Safety is a key requirement of this role. The successful driver must:
- Apply defensive driving techniques.
- Conduct appropriate vehicle inspections.
- Report emergencies and vehicle defects according to procedure.
- Maintain the vehicle, uniform and PPE in a clean and orderly condition.
- Follow all safety procedures and company SOPs.
- Ensure loads are secured and legally compliant.
- Maintain a safe driving record.
Assessments and Training
Successful candidates will be required to successfully undergo or complete applicable company processes, including:
- Medical evaluation.
- USCS training modules.
- Company induction processes.
- Practical driving evaluation.
- Verification of a clean criminal record.
