Job Overview

Alstom, through its Bombela Maintenance business, is seeking a Logistics Operator to join its team at the Gautrain Maintenance Depot in Midrand, Johannesburg. Bombela Maintenance is responsible for maintaining the Gautrain network and has a strong focus on safety, reliability and operational excellence.

The Logistics Operator will be responsible for the physical handling, counting, receiving, dispatching and movement of materials within the warehouse, while ensuring that all transactions are accurately captured on the relevant information systems.

Key Responsibilities

Safety and Quality

  • Comply with Alstom South Africa safety standards and procedures.
  • Follow the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA).
  • Ensure materials and equipment are handled safely at all times.
  • Report unsafe conditions or issues that could affect warehouse operations.

Receiving and Dispatching

  • Receive tools, equipment and materials into the warehouse accurately and timeously.
  • Dispatch tools and materials to work teams according to operational requirements.
  • Ensure that all movements of stock are correctly recorded.
  • Maintain accurate documentation relating to goods received and issued.

Stock Control

  • Perform daily cycle counts according to the annual stock-count plan.
  • Accurately count and verify warehouse materials.
  • Identify and report discrepancies between physical stock and system records.
  • Ensure materials are correctly stored and accounted for.

Warehouse Operations

  • Maintain stores cleanliness and ensure designated areas remain neat and organised.
  • Follow established procedures for stacking and storing materials.
  • Ensure tools, equipment and materials are stored correctly to prevent damage or loss.
  • Assist with the general movement and organisation of warehouse stock.

Systems and Administration

  • Record material movements accurately using systems such as MAXIMO and GSI.
  • Ensure information captured on the systems is complete and accurate.
  • Maintain appropriate records relating to warehouse activities.
  • Support accurate reporting and stock administration.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

Applicants should have:

  • Matric certificate
  • Basic stores qualification
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Good organisational and planning skills
  • Good computer skills, particularly Excel, Word and Outlook
  • Knowledge of tooling and equipment
  • General knowledge of warehouse/stores functions
  • Ability to work accurately with stock and documentation
  • Ability to work shifts
  • South African citizenship

Knowledge of SAP will be an advantage.

Technical industry knowledge and previous experience within a technical, engineering, railway, manufacturing, logistics or warehouse environment will also be advantageous.

Skills and Competencies

The successful candidate should be organised, dependable and comfortable working in a warehouse environment. Attention to detail is particularly important because the role involves counting materials, recording stock movements and ensuring that the correct equipment reaches work teams.

You should also be able to follow procedures, communicate effectively with colleagues and take responsibility for completing assigned tasks accurately and on time.

Strong self-management is required, as the successful candidate will be expected to take ownership of their responsibilities while consistently meeting quality, safety and productivity standards.

Working Environment

The position is based at the Gautrain Maintenance Depot in Midrand, Johannesburg. As the depot supports railway maintenance operations, the role operates within a highly structured environment where safety, accuracy and reliability are essential.

The successful candidate must be prepared to work shifts according to operational requirements.
