Job Overview
Ascot Park Hospital is seeking a reliable, professional, and detail-oriented CSSD Attendant to join its team in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. The successful candidate will be responsible for the processing, cleaning, preparation, sterilisation, packing, and control of surgical instruments and sterile supplies used by the main theatre and wards.
The CSSD Attendant plays an important role in ensuring that sterile equipment and supplies are available when required and that all infection prevention and control procedures are consistently followed. The position requires someone who understands the importance of accuracy, hygiene, safety, confidentiality, and attention to detail when working with surgical instruments and sterilisation equipment.
The successful applicant must be comfortable working under pressure and be able to work independently with minimal supervision. They must also be prepared to work additional hours when required and work closely with theatre staff, nursing staff, doctors, maintenance teams, technicians, and other hospital personnel.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants should meet the following requirements:
- Grade 12 qualification.
- Minimum of 1–2 years’ relevant CSSD experience.
- A recognised CSSD course will be an advantage.
- Previous experience working with surgical instruments and sterilisation processes will be beneficial.
- Must be computer literate.
- Must be prepared to work additional hours when required.
- Excellent interpersonal and telephone communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and under minimum supervision.
- Excellent observation and attention-to-detail skills.
Key Responsibilities
The CSSD Attendant will be responsible for processing used instrumentation for the main theatre and wards. This includes thoroughly cleaning instruments before sterilisation and ensuring sterile supplies are safely prepared and available for use.
Responsibilities include:
- Cleaning and processing used surgical instruments.
- Preparing instruments and equipment for sterilisation.
- Operating and monitoring autoclaves, sonic washers, and other sterilising equipment.
- Conducting chemical and biological testing of autoclaves.
- Recording and reporting steriliser test results accurately.
- Identifying irregularities in sterilisation test results and reporting them.
- Selecting and monitoring the appropriate autoclave cycles.
- Correctly loading and unloading autoclaves without overloading equipment.
- Using indicator tape and appropriate packaging methods.
- Double-packing sharp instrumentation where required.
- Ensuring sterilised packs are handled and stored correctly.
- Identifying and separating sterile and non-sterile packs.
- Inspecting instruments for damage and arranging repairs where necessary.
- Correctly assembling surgical instrument sets according to departmental requirements.
- Ensuring instrument packs are accurately labelled and complete.
- Maintaining accurate control of surgical instruments and equipment.
- Supporting efficient workflow within the CSSD.
Linen and Stock Control
The successful candidate will also assist with linen and surgical stock management. Duties include identifying different types of linen, folding and packing linen according to theatre requirements, and removing damaged or unsuitable linen from stock.
The role includes:
- Sorting linen for laundry.
- Receiving and checking linen returned from laundry.
- Following up on linen sent for repair.
- Reporting linen shortages to the Unit Manager.
- Conducting monthly linen stock counts.
- Preparing specific drapes and linen packs for different theatre disciplines.
- Assisting theatre staff with linen counts.
- Controlling linen, packs, instruments, and equipment.
- Receiving and storing surgical stock.
- Monitoring stock levels and informing stores of anticipated requirements.
Infection Control and Risk Management
Infection prevention and control is a critical part of this position. The CSSD Attendant must ensure that all applicable hospital infection-control procedures are followed when handling instruments, equipment, linen, and potentially infectious packs.
The employee will assist with effective sterilisation processes, clean sterilising equipment, pack instruments according to departmental requirements, and ensure accurate control of instrumentation before sterilisation.

This is a hands-on hospital role and requires the successful candidate to be physically capable of:
- Standing for extended periods.

- Lifting and reaching overhead.
- Performing manual handling activities.
- Handling surgical instruments and equipment safely.
General Duties
The CSSD Attendant will be expected to maintain a clean, organised, and efficient working environment. This includes damp dusting the department, receiving and packing away surgical stock, following up on outstanding items, attending CSSD forums, and keeping up to date with developments relevant to the department.
The employee must maintain hospital customer-service standards and perform additional reasonable duties within their scope of practice and development.
