JOB OVERVIEW
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport is recruiting for a Road Worker to join the PMB Region’s Signs Team based in Umzimkhulu, Ixopo.
The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting road maintenance and construction activities, helping ensure that roads and related infrastructure remain safe, functional and properly maintained. This is a practical, hands-on position suited to candidates who are comfortable working as part of a team and performing physical outdoor duties.
The role includes a variety of road maintenance, construction, cleaning and infrastructure-related activities. Employees may be required to assist with construction work, road surfacing, drainage, signage, fencing, grass cutting and general road upkeep.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate may be responsible for:
- Constructing culverts and side drains.
- Erecting and maintaining steel guardrails and gabions.
- Assisting with road earthworks and layer works.
- Cleaning and maintaining roads, sidewalks and resting areas.
- Performing surfacing and pothole patching.
- Assisting with fencing and pipe-laying activities.
- Setting road markings and road studs.
- Installing road signs, distance markers and barricades.
- Helping to safely barricade work areas during road maintenance activities.
- Crushing road construction materials.
- Clearing brush and cutting grass along road infrastructure.
- Supporting general road maintenance and construction activities as required.
- Following workplace safety procedures and instructions.
- Working effectively with colleagues to complete assigned tasks accurately and efficiently.
The position requires a willingness to perform different practical duties depending on operational requirements. Candidates should therefore be flexible and prepared to work in various outdoor environments.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must have:
- NQF Level 1 or Level 2 qualification, such as an ABET Level 2 certificate or equivalent.

EMPLOYMENT DETAILS
This is a permanent position within the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport, offering a salary of R170,226 per annum.
The position is based at the Signs Team in Umzimkhulu, Ixopo, within the PMB Region. The Department has indicated that employment equity targets will be considered when filling the position.
