About the Role
Dis-Chem Pharmacies is looking for a Casual Cashier to join its Menlyn store in Pretoria. The successful candidate will support the store’s front-line customer service function by processing customer transactions accurately, providing professional assistance and helping create a positive shopping experience.
This role is focused on operating the till efficiently while following Dis-Chem’s policies, procedures and security requirements. The Cashier will be responsible for handling different forms of payment, processing refunds and exchanges where authorised, managing cash securely and assisting customers with general queries.
The opportunity is suitable for someone who has previous cashier or till-operation experience and enjoys working directly with customers in a busy retail environment.
Key Responsibilities
Customer Service
The Cashier is expected to provide professional and friendly service throughout every customer interaction.
Responsibilities include:
- Greeting and assisting customers.
- Establishing professional relationships with customers.
- Following Dis-Chem’s customer service policies and procedures.
- Applying the company’s five-star communication principles.
- Responding appropriately to customer queries.
- Reporting customer complaints and compliments to the Frontline Supervisor or store management.
- Providing information about store merchandise where required.
- Remaining aware of current sales and promotions.
The successful candidate should be able to communicate confidently and maintain a positive attitude, even during busy periods.
Till and Payment Processing
A major responsibility of the position is ensuring that all transactions are processed accurately.
The Cashier will:
- Process customer purchases.
- Receive payments through cash, bank cards, vouchers, coupons and other accepted payment methods.
- Process loyalty cards and applicable partner programmes.
- Process refunds and exchanges when authorised.
- Ensure all line voids and price changes have the necessary supervisor approval.
- Ensure all outgoing stock, items and scripts are scanned and paid for.
- Maintain the security and accuracy of the till.
- Place cash into the drop safe according to Dis-Chem procedures.
Accuracy is extremely important, as the role requires the Cashier to minimise errors and help prevent fraud and financial losses.
Cash Handling and Security
The Cashier will be responsible for handling store cash in a secure and confidential manner.
This includes:
- Keeping all money securely inside the till.
- Handling daily takings confidentially.
- Following cash-handling procedures.
- Ensuring personal till codes and passwords remain confidential.
- Never allowing another person to use their assigned code or password.
- Reporting suspicious behaviour to management.
- Following all Dis-Chem security policies and procedures.
Employees are expected to remain alert and report anything that could place customers, colleagues, stock or company assets at risk.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must have:
- Grade 12 / Matric.
- At least 6 months’ cashier or till-operation experience.
- Computer literacy, including MS Office.
- Sound numerical skills.
- Strong spoken and written English.
- Basic customer service skills.
- Willingness and ability to work retail hours.
A third additional language will be advantageous.
