The Casual Cashier will play an important role in delivering an excellent customer experience at the point of sale. The position involves accurately processing customer transactions, handling different payment methods, assisting customers with queries and promotions, and ensuring that all cash-handling procedures are followed.

The successful candidate should be comfortable working in a busy retail environment and interacting with customers in a professional, friendly and helpful manner. Accuracy, honesty, reliability and attention to detail are particularly important because the role involves handling cash and processing financial transactions.

Purpose of the Role

The primary purpose of the Casual Cashier role is to support customer service at the point of sale while contributing to a world-class shopping experience.

Cashiers are responsible for recording customer transactions on the Dis-Chem operating system according to established company policies and standard operating procedures. The role requires a strong focus on accuracy, security and the prevention of errors or fraudulent activity.

The successful candidate will also assist customers with general merchandise queries, remain informed about current promotions and provide professional service throughout every customer interaction.

Key Responsibilities

The Casual Cashier will be responsible for:

  • Providing friendly and professional customer service.
  • Establishing positive relationships with customers.
  • Processing customer purchases accurately.
  • Receiving payments through cash, bank cards, vouchers, coupons and other approved payment methods.
  • Processing refunds and exchanges when authorised.
  • Ensuring all transactions are accurately recorded.
  • Processing customer loyalty cards and relevant rewards programmes.
  • Handling cash securely and according to Dis-Chem procedures.
  • Ensuring money is safely stored in the till and deposited into the drop safe according to company procedures.
  • Keeping personal till codes and passwords secure.
  • Ensuring outgoing stock, items and scripts are correctly scanned and paid for.
  • Ensuring line voids and price changes are properly approved.
  • Remaining aware of current sales, promotions and merchandise.
  • Responding to customer queries about products and services.
  • Reporting customer complaints and compliments to the appropriate supervisor or store management.
  • Identifying and reporting suspicious behaviour or potential security risks.
  • Following Dis-Chem security policies and procedures.
  • Maintaining confidentiality when handling daily takings.
  • Following all customer service policies and standard operating procedures.
  • Supporting a safe environment for customers and colleagues.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants should meet the following essential requirements:

  • Grade 12 / Matric.
  • At least 6 months’ cashier or till operations experience.
  • Computer literacy, including basic MS Office skills.
  • Sound numerical ability.
  • Strong command of English.
  • Basic customer service skills.
  • Willingness and ability to work retail hours.

Candidates should also be comfortable working in a customer-facing environment and handling transactions accurately.

Skills and Competencies

The ideal candidate should have a good understanding of operating cash registers and maintaining cash drawers. Knowledge of processing sales, refunds and different payment methods will be important.

Because this is a retail position, flexibility regarding working hours is important. Candidates should be prepared to work according to the operational needs of the store.

Remuneration and Benefits

Salary: Market-related.

This is a part-time/casual opportunity within Dis-Chem’s Retail division.
