Job Overview

Dis-Chem Pharmacies is looking for experienced Cashiers to join its new store in Gonubie, East London. The successful candidates will be responsible for providing efficient and professional customer service at the point of sale while helping to create a world-class shopping experience for Dis-Chem customers.

The Cashier will process customer transactions using the Dis-Chem operating system and must consistently follow company policies, standard operating procedures and security requirements. Accuracy is essential in this position, particularly when handling cash, processing payments, completing refunds and operating the till.

The role requires someone who is comfortable working in a busy retail environment, enjoys interacting with customers and can maintain a high level of concentration while processing transactions. The successful candidate should also be trustworthy, reliable, presentable and able to work accurately under pressure.

Although the position is listed under entry-level experience, applicants must have at least six months of cashier or till operations experience. Candidates should also have Grade 12/Matric, sound numerical skills and basic customer service knowledge.

Key Responsibilities

The Cashier will be responsible for a range of point-of-sale and customer service activities, including:

  • Providing professional and friendly customer service.
  • Establishing positive relationships with customers.
  • Processing customer purchases accurately and efficiently.
  • Receiving and processing cash, bank cards, vouchers, coupons and other accepted forms of payment.
  • Operating the cash register and maintaining the cash drawer accurately.
  • Ensuring all transactions are processed according to Dis-Chem policies and procedures.
  • Processing customer loyalty cards and relevant accelerator partner programmes.
  • Ensuring cash is placed in the drop safe according to Dis-Chem standard operating procedures.
  • Keeping all money securely inside the till while working.
  • Ensuring outgoing stock, items and scripts are scanned and paid for correctly.
  • Processing authorised merchandise exchanges and returns.
  • Ensuring line voids and price changes are properly approved and signed off by the supervisor.
  • Remaining aware of current sales, promotions and special offers.
  • Informing customers about relevant promotions.
  • Addressing customer queries regarding store merchandise.
  • Reporting customer complaints and compliments to the Frontline Supervisor or store management.
  • Maintaining the required customer turnover hourly rate.
  • Following Dis-Chem’s five-star communication principles.
  • Protecting personal till access codes and passwords.
  • Ensuring passwords and access credentials are not shared with other employees.
  • Handling daily takings confidentially.
  • Discussing financial information only with authorised management.
  • Remaining alert to suspicious behaviour and reporting concerns to management.
  • Following all Dis-Chem security policies and procedures.
  • Ensuring customers and colleagues are not exposed to unnecessary risks.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following essential requirements:

  • Grade 12 / Matric.
  • At least 6 months’ cashier or till operations experience.
  • Computer literacy, including MS Office.
  • Sound numerical skills.
  • Strong command of the English language.
  • Basic customer service knowledge.
  • Willingness and ability to work retail hours.

Experience operating a cash register and maintaining a cash drawer will be particularly important, as the role involves processing different forms of payment while maintaining a high degree of accuracy.

Customer Service

Customer service is a major part of this position. Cashiers represent the Dis-Chem brand every time they interact with customers and are expected to remain professional, helpful and respectful.

The successful candidate should be able to communicate clearly, listen to customer queries and assist customers appropriately. Where a complaint or issue cannot be resolved at cashier level, it should be escalated to the relevant supervisor or member of management.

Cashiers should also remain informed about current promotions and sales so that customers can be made aware of opportunities available in-store.

Cash Handling and Security

Because the role involves handling customer payments, honesty, accuracy and accountability are critical.

Cashiers must ensure that cash and other forms of payment are handled according to Dis-Chem procedures. Daily takings must be treated confidentially, while suspicious behaviour, security concerns or potential fraud risks must be reported to management.

Employees are also responsible for ensuring that their personal till codes and passwords remain secure and are never shared with colleagues.

Special Conditions of Employment

Applicants must:

  • Be willing and able to work retail hours.
  • Have reliable transport and/or live close enough to the store.
  • Be a South African citizen.
  • Have clear credit and criminal records.

Because this is a retail position, candidates should be prepared to work according to the store’s operating schedule, including applicable weekends and other retail trading periods.
