📢 JOB OVERVIEW
Unitrans is looking for a General Worker to join its team in Newlands East, KwaZulu-Natal.
The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining cleanliness, hygiene and safe working conditions across operational areas. The role involves cleaning and housekeeping around loading areas, workshops, machine yards, offices, ablutions, stores and other high-traffic work environments.
The General Worker will help ensure that areas remain free from debris, mud, spills and other hazards that could affect employees, vehicles and heavy equipment. This position requires someone who is physically fit, safety-conscious, reliable and able to work independently and as part of a team.
🎓 MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Applicants should have:
- Grade 10–12, with Grade 12 preferred.
- Basic cleaning or safety training will be advantageous.
- 1–2 years’ cleaning experience in industrial, agricultural or logistics operations.
- Experience working around heavy equipment or high-traffic operational areas will be beneficial.
- Knowledge of cleaning chemicals and industrial waste handling.
- Understanding of operational housekeeping procedures.
- Ability to use basic cleaning equipment.
- Good safety awareness and communication skills.
- Ability to perform manual and repetitive tasks.
🧹 KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Cleaning operational areas, workshops, offices and ablution facilities.
- Removing cane residue, mud, leaves, dust, oil spills and other debris.
- Cleaning workshop floors, benches, tools and waste areas.
- Keeping walkways, platforms and access points clear.
- Maintaining cleanliness around fuel stations, wash bays, parking areas and storage yards.
- Performing routine and deep-cleaning duties.
- Emptying bins and replacing liners.
- Collecting and transporting waste to designated disposal areas.
- Separating waste according to site requirements.
- Assisting with recycling and safe disposal of oil-contaminated materials.
- Keeping floors, ramps and pathways dry and free from hazards.
- Identifying and reporting spills, broken glass, damaged flooring and unsafe storage.
- Using warning signs such as “Wet Floor” when required.
- Following company safety policies and PPE requirements.
- Using cleaning chemicals correctly and storing them safely.
🦺 SAFETY & TEAMWORK
The General Worker must remain alert when working near trucks, tractors, loaders, harvesters and other heavy machinery.
The successful candidate will:
- Communicate with the Supervisor regarding cleaning priorities.
- Coordinate with workshop staff, drivers and machine operators.
- Attend daily operational briefings.
- Report hazards and incidents immediately.
- Notify the Supervisor when cleaning materials are running low.
- Follow all safety procedures when working around machinery.
- Wear required PPE at all times.
🧰 EQUIPMENT & REPORTING
The candidate will use equipment such as:
- Brooms.
- Mops.
- Industrial brushes.
- Vacuums.
- Pressure washers.
- Other approved cleaning tools.
Cleaning equipment must be maintained properly and faults reported immediately. Chemicals must be handled according to safety requirements.
The successful candidate will also complete daily cleaning checklists and housekeeping logs and assist with compliance audits.
💪 WORKING CONDITIONS
The position involves working both indoors and outdoors and may include exposure to:
- Dust and mud.
- Cane debris.
- Noise.
- Changing weather conditions.
- Heavy machinery and moving vehicles.
Applicants must be physically fit and able to bend, lift, stand for extended periods and walk on uneven ground.
Working hours may include shifts, weekends, public holidays and peak operational periods.
