Job Overview

Alstom, through Gibela, is looking for a suitably qualified and experienced Storekeeper to join the Services department in Midrand. The successful candidate will be responsible for the efficient management, storage, movement and tracking of materials and inventory within the warehouse.

Gibela is Africa’s largest train manufacturing and passenger train maintenance company and plays a key role in the revitalisation of South Africa’s commuter rail sector. This position contributes directly to ensuring that materials are available when required and that warehouse operations support safe, efficient and cost-effective production and maintenance activities.

Reporting to the Warehouse Supervisor, the Storekeeper will oversee the physical flow of materials, including goods receiving, storage, line-side replenishment, packaging, shipping and internal material movements. The role requires strong attention to detail, accurate record keeping and a commitment to Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) standards.

Key Responsibilities

The Storekeeper will be responsible for:

  • Receiving incoming stock and checking quantities and quality against purchase orders.
  • Safely storing materials in the appropriate warehouse locations.
  • Maintaining accurate records of all inventory movements, receipts and shipments.
  • Monitoring stock levels and ensuring timely replenishment of line-side supplies.
  • Using inventory management systems and the company’s ERP system to maintain accurate stock information.
  • Conducting regular stock counts and investigating and reconciling discrepancies.
  • Applying appropriate inventory methods, including FIFO or LIFO where required.
  • Ensuring materials are correctly labelled and stored for easy identification and access.
  • Managing warehouse space efficiently.
  • Safely loading and unloading materials while preventing damage.
  • Coordinating stock movements and stock in transit for intraplant shipments.
  • Assisting internal and external customers with material requirements and enquiries.
  • Updating missing-part records in collaboration with operations.
  • Identifying obsolete, slow-moving, duplicate and damaged materials.
  • Supporting reverse logistics processes involving non-conforming components, damaged materials, obsolete items and repair-loop processes.
  • Maintaining a clean, safe and organised warehouse using 5S housekeeping principles.
  • Following all health and safety requirements relating to warehouse operations, heavy equipment and hazardous materials.
  • Conducting routine equipment checks and reporting defects.
  • Managing warehouse waste responsibly, including recycling and disposal of hazardous materials where applicable.
  • Documenting damaged goods, discrepancies, incidents and other warehouse issues according to company procedures.
  • Supporting internal and external warehouse audits by providing the required documentation.
  • Assisting with investigations into quality-related complaints and supporting root-cause problem solving.
  • Participating in training and development programmes to strengthen warehouse and inventory management skills.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants should have:

  • Grade 12 / Matric or equivalent.
  • Forklift or equivalent equipment licence.
  • 2–3 years’ warehousing experience, particularly in receiving and dispatching materials.
  • Experience using Warehouse Management Systems (WMS).
  • Ability to accurately maintain inventory and material movement records.
  • Ability to work safely with warehouse equipment and materials.
  • Willingness to work overtime when operationally required.

Advantageous Qualifications & Experience

The following will be advantageous:

  • Diploma in Supply Chain and Logistics Management.
  • SAPICS certification.
  • 2–3 years’ SAP ERP experience/knowledge.
  • Experience within a manufacturing, engineering, logistics or similar warehouse environment.
