Job Overview
Unitrans is looking for a Shunter Driver to support its bus operations in Kathu, Northern Cape. The successful candidate will be responsible for safely moving and positioning buses within company premises and between different areas of the depot, particularly when vehicles need to be prepared for service, maintenance or other operational activities.
The Shunter Driver plays an important role in keeping the bus fleet organised and ensuring vehicles are positioned correctly for maintenance and daily operations. The role requires excellent spatial awareness, responsible vehicle handling and a strong understanding of safety procedures.
The ideal candidate should be a confident and safety-conscious driver who can operate buses carefully in confined depot and workshop environments.
Key Responsibilities
The Shunter Driver will be responsible for safely moving buses around the company’s premises and between designated areas when required.
Key duties include:
- Moving buses around company premises and between different sections for maintenance activities.
- Positioning buses correctly in designated areas.
- Road-testing buses when requested by artisans or workshop supervisors.
- Driving buses through bus-wash machines.
- Driving vehicles safely onto and off vehicle inspection or maintenance pits.
- Ensuring buses are parked in the stipulated areas.
- Following all applicable vehicle-operation and workplace safety procedures.
- Taking appropriate care when manoeuvring vehicles in confined spaces.
- Supporting workshop and maintenance teams with the movement of vehicles.
- Performing duties in accordance with company policies, procedures and safety requirements.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must have:
- Grade 12 / Matric.
- Valid Code 14 driver’s licence.
- Valid Professional Driving Permit (PDP).
The successful candidate must be comfortable operating large vehicles and demonstrate a responsible approach to vehicle safety.
Skills & Competencies
A Shunter Driver needs strong practical driving skills and good awareness of their surroundings. Because the position involves moving buses around depots, workshops and other restricted areas, spatial awareness and careful vehicle positioning are particularly important.
