Job Overview
Macsteel’s Tube & Pipe division at Macsteel City in Elandsfontein is looking for a dynamic and skilled Crane Driver to join its production environment.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of an overhead travelling crane, including the movement and offloading of pipe and tube bundles from the storage conveyor onto trailers. The role is critical to maintaining a smooth production process and ensuring that bundles are moved safely, efficiently and without damage.
The Crane Driver will also be responsible for checking lifting equipment and slings, completing daily crane documentation, supporting the bundling operator during changeovers and assisting the Tube Maker with mill changeovers.
This is a fast-paced manufacturing environment that requires someone who is safety-conscious, physically capable and able to work independently while still functioning effectively as part of a production team.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Grade 12 / Matric.
- Ability to read, write and communicate in English.
- Valid Crane Licence, with proof of certification required.
- Proven ability to operate an overhead travelling crane.
- Experience and knowledge of slinging.
- Strong coordination and physical dexterity.
- Physically fit and able to remain on your feet for extended periods.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong teamwork skills.
- Ability to work safely in a production environment.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Crane Operation & Safety
The Crane Driver will operate the overhead travelling crane to move and transport bundles safely throughout the production and storage areas.
Responsibilities include:
- Ensuring the overhead travelling crane remains in good working condition.
- Checking that all lifting equipment and slings are safe and in good condition.
- Operating the crane safely when moving bundles and loads.
- Using the crane siren when transporting loads to alert employees in the surrounding area.
- Handling all bundles carefully to prevent damage, particularly when positioning loads near trailer uprights.
- Ensuring the crane remote control remains in good working condition.
- Ensuring remote-control batteries are replaced timeously when required.
- Following the company’s safety approach of stop, think, plan and do.
Bundle Offloading
The successful candidate will ensure that bundles are efficiently removed from the storage conveyor and loaded onto trailers.
Duties include:
- Visually checking pipe and tube ends for burrs.
- Checking that labels are securely attached to each bundle.
- Ensuring bundle straps are secure before movement.
- Ensuring sufficient trailers are available.
- Ensuring trailers are positioned close to the storage conveyor to minimise unnecessary crane travel.
- Ensuring the storage conveyor is offloaded timeously so that the bundling process is not interrupted.
- Ensuring full trailers are removed and replaced with empty trailers by the Distribution Centre.
- Taking care to prevent damage to bundles during transportation.
Equipment & Breakdown Support
If the crane experiences a breakdown, the Crane Driver will assist in ensuring that production continues with minimal interruption.
This includes arranging for a forklift to remove bundles and load them onto trailers when necessary to prevent the mill from stopping.
The employee must also monitor lifting equipment and report any issues that could affect safe and efficient operations.
Documentation
The Crane Driver must ensure that all required documentation is completed accurately.
This includes:
- Completing crane logbooks daily.
- Completing lifting-equipment records.
- Reporting equipment defects or safety concerns.
- Ensuring relevant operational records are kept up to date.
Production Support
The role also provides support to other members of the production team.
The successful candidate will:
- Assist the bundling operator with setting up the bundling process during changeovers.
- Assist with housekeeping around the bundling operation.
- Assist the Tube Maker during mill changeovers.
- Work closely with production employees to maintain an efficient workflow.
- Support production requirements while maintaining safety and quality standards.
