Job Purpose

SPARK Schools is looking for Primary School Teacher Assistants to join its Johannesburg Region schools on a temporary basis.

Teacher Assistants are developing educators who work alongside mentor teachers to support classroom instruction, scholar achievement and a positive learning environment. The role provides practical teaching exposure while helping candidates develop their content knowledge, teaching ability and classroom-management skills.

The successful candidate will assist with lessons, assessments, scholar interventions, data tracking, technology-based learning and extracurricular activities.

Key Responsibilities

Instruction & Curriculum Support

  • Co-plan and co-teach in-person and distance-learning lessons.
  • Facilitate intervention and acceleration sessions.
  • Teach selected lessons under mentor guidance.
  • Assist with assessments, marking and homework.
  • Facilitate academic, club and enrichment lessons.
  • Support Project-Based Learning activities.
  • Use data to help personalise learning.
  • Support differentiated instruction through technology.
  • Assist with coding and robotics lessons.

Planning & Collaboration

  • Assist with marking assessments and examinations.
  • Track subject and scholar data.
  • Provide administrative support to teachers.
  • Participate in professional development, mentorship and coaching sessions.
  • Attend check-ins and feedback sessions.

Scholar Progress Monitoring

  • Track academic performance and help ensure Personalised Learning Plans remain on track.
  • Analyse scholar data and assist with data-driven interventions.
  • Monitor scholar engagement with the Innovation HUB and online learning programmes.
  • Help students use educational software and computer programmes.
  • Report damaged hardware and complete relevant incident reports.
  • Conduct individual intervention sessions for scholars requiring additional support.

Enrichment & After-School Activities

  • Supervise scholars during after-school programmes.
  • Facilitate structured activities and play.
  • Ensure programme resources are used responsibly.
  • Participate in school events and enrichment activities.

Character Development & Culture

Teacher Assistants are expected to support SPARK’s culture by:

  • Participating in Character Quotient (CQ) sessions.
  • Promoting positive behaviour-management strategies.
  • Supporting an inclusive environment focused on diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Participating in activities that promote SPARK’s values and culture.

Professionalism & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Communicate professionally with teachers, families and other stakeholders.
  • Attend parent meetings and Saturday school events when required.
  • Participate in school activities and events.
  • Represent SPARK Schools professionally.
  • Promote the organisation’s vision, mission and values.

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow child-protection, anti-bullying, crisis-management and health-and-safety policies.
  • Support scholars during transitions, lunch, breaks and other non-instructional periods.
  • Follow operational procedures and instructions.
  • Provide administrative support when required.
  • Submit scholar information and records accurately.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must have:

  • Grade 12 certificate.
  • English language fluency.
  • Police Clearance Certificate.
  • Be studying part-time toward a B.Ed. or PGCE in the Intermediate or Senior Phase, currently in 3rd or 4th year.
  • A desire to become a qualified teacher.
  • Provisional SACE registration.

Experience & Skills

Previous experience working with or managing primary school-aged children is required.

Candidates should also have:
