Job Overview
Unitrans is seeking experienced Professional Bus Drivers to join its passenger transport operations in Johannesburg. The successful candidates will be responsible for safely transporting passengers along established routes while ensuring that passengers reach their destinations safely and on time.
This position requires a professional driver with proven passenger transport experience, strong defensive and preventative driving skills, and a commitment to following road traffic legislation, company policies and safety procedures.
The driver will operate buses on scheduled services, monitor traffic and road conditions, maintain appropriate speeds, and ensure that passengers experience safe and professional transportation throughout their journey.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must have:
- Grade 12 / National Certificate
- Job-specific driver training
- An appropriate driver’s licence, including CE–G, CE–PG or C–G
- Valid Public Driving Permit / PrDP (PG)
- Proven experience in the same or a similar bus-driving position
- Strong knowledge of defensive and preventative driving techniques
- Knowledge and understanding of traffic laws and passenger transport safety requirements
- A commitment to following company policies, procedures and code of conduct
- Ability to work safely and professionally while transporting passengers
Key Responsibilities
The successful Bus Driver will be responsible for safely operating passenger buses along designated routes and ensuring passengers arrive at their destinations according to scheduled times.
Key responsibilities include:
- Inspecting the bus before each journey for defects, deviations or malfunctions.
- Recording vehicle defects on the relevant checklist and reporting them to the supervisor.
- Ensuring the vehicle is safe and roadworthy before starting a journey.
- Transporting and registering passengers according to trip requirements.
- Following established routes and only stopping at authorised locations.
- Adhering to speed limits, road signs and all applicable traffic laws.
- Maintaining a professional and positive attitude when dealing with passengers and customers.
- Ensuring the bus remains clean and properly maintained.
- Checking that the vehicle is refuelled when required.
- Completing logbooks accurately and recording updated driving hours.
- Reporting incidents, accidents, near misses and vehicle damage immediately.
- Participating in required training and safety sessions.
- Following Unitrans Passenger rules and regulations.
- Adhering to the customer’s Safety Management System (SMS) requirements.
- Following all applicable health, safety and transport procedures.
- Ensuring passengers use seat belts where applicable.
- Taking responsibility for the vehicle and ignition keys while the vehicle is in the driver’s possession.
- Ensuring the vehicle is secured correctly after parking.
- Using wheel chocks as required after parking.
- Reporting any vehicle damage resulting from the vehicle’s operation.
- Following passenger collection times specified on the job card.
- Avoiding unauthorised route deviations.
- Ensuring all required documentation is completed correctly.
Safety & Compliance
Safety is a major part of this position. Drivers are expected to demonstrate safe driving habits and actively work to prevent accidents and incidents.
The successful candidate must understand and follow the company’s written procedures, driver manual, code of conduct, HST requirements and safety policies.
Drivers must immediately report incidents and related matters to management and participate in relevant safety and training sessions.
The driver is also responsible for ensuring that the bus is operated responsibly and that passengers, other road users and company property are protected throughout every journey.
Professional Conduct
Bus Drivers represent Unitrans while interacting with passengers and customers. Professional conduct, reliability and good communication are therefore essential.
Drivers must not deviate from authorised routes on their own initiative, make unauthorised stops or allow themselves to be influenced into breaking company procedures.
They must maintain a positive attitude toward customers, follow authorised collection and drop-off points, and ensure that all passenger transport activities are carried out according to company standards.
Working Environment
This is a fixed-term temporary position based at the Mega Bus operation in Crown Mines, Johannesburg.
The role involves operating passenger buses on scheduled services and may require drivers to work according to operational schedules. Drivers must be prepared to follow established procedures and meet passenger collection and arrival times.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is an experienced professional driver who takes pride in passenger safety and understands the responsibility involved in operating a large passenger vehicle.
You should be safety-conscious, disciplined, punctual and comfortable working independently while following established procedures. Strong knowledge of defensive driving, traffic regulations and passenger transport operations will be important in this role.
