Job Overview
Exxaro Resources is looking for a Driver, Lowbed to join its Grootegeluk Coal operations in Lephalale, Limpopo. This permanent position is suited to an experienced driver who is confident operating lowbed vehicles and transporting heavy machinery safely and efficiently in a mining or industrial environment.
The successful candidate will play an important role in supporting transport operations by ensuring heavy equipment is moved safely between required locations. The role involves conducting thorough vehicle inspections, monitoring vehicle condition, securing heavy loads, assisting crane drivers with rigging activities and maintaining high standards of safety and housekeeping.
Safety awareness is a key requirement, and the successful candidate must be able to identify and report vehicle defects promptly while following all relevant safety procedures and operational standards.
Key Responsibilities
The Driver, Lowbed will be responsible for:
- Conducting pre-use inspections on lowbed vehicles to ensure they are safe and operational.
- Checking vehicle components and monitoring fluid levels.
- Ensuring fluid levels remain within manufacturer specifications.
- Reporting vehicle defects immediately to the transport workshop.
- Operating lowbed vehicles safely when loading and transporting heavy machinery.
- Ensuring heavy equipment is properly secured before transportation.
- Applying appropriate rigging techniques and principles when securing loads.
- Assisting crane drivers with rigging activities.
- Following all safety regulations and procedures during loading, transportation and unloading operations.
- Maintaining good housekeeping around the vehicle and work area.
- Cleaning vehicles after operations.
- Completing required vehicle checklists accurately.
- Reporting defects or operational concerns without delay.
- Working effectively with team members and other operational personnel.
- Responding quickly to changing business and operational requirements.
- Demonstrating flexibility and adaptability when working across different operational activities.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Grade 10 / Standard 8 Technical qualification.
- AET Level 4 certification.
- Valid Code C Public Driver’s Licence.
- At least 1 year of relevant experience transporting goods and machinery.
- Ability to successfully complete the required psychometric assessment conducted by Exxaro.
- Ability to obtain the required Certificate of Fitness, conducted by Exxaro.
- Strong understanding of workplace safety regulations and practices.
- Experience conducting vehicle pre-use inspections.
- Ability to work effectively within a team environment.
- Ability to assist crane drivers with rigging activities.
Technical & Safety Requirements
The role requires a strong understanding of safe heavy-equipment transportation. The successful candidate should understand how to inspect a vehicle before use and recognise potential defects that could affect vehicle safety or operational performance.
Drivers will also be expected to monitor vehicle fluids, maintain vehicle cleanliness and ensure all necessary checklists are completed.
When transporting machinery, loads must be secured correctly using appropriate rigging principles. The successful candidate will therefore need to work closely with crane drivers and other team members while maintaining strict compliance with safety requirements.
Safety is central to the position, and candidates should demonstrate strong safety awareness and a willingness to report hazards, defects and unsafe conditions immediately.
