Job Overview
Macsteel is seeking a reliable, safety-conscious and customer-focused Code 14 Driver to join its Warehouse and Logistics team in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape. The successful candidate will be responsible for completing local and long-distance customer deliveries while ensuring that all transportation activities are carried out safely, efficiently and in accordance with company procedures and road traffic legislation.
This role requires a professional driver who can safely transport Macsteel products and materials, maintain the roadworthiness of the allocated vehicle, complete required vehicle inspections and ensure that deliveries reach the correct customers within the required timeframes.
The successful candidate will also interact directly with customers and suppliers, making professionalism, communication and good customer service important aspects of the role. Drivers will be expected to comply with Macsteel’s SHEQ requirements, use the required PPE and company attire, and maintain high standards of safety throughout all driving, loading and offloading activities.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants should meet the following requirements:
- Grade 12 / NQF Level 4.
- Valid Code 14 / EC driver’s licence.
- Valid Professional Driving Permit (PDP).
- Previous Code 14 driving experience.
- Previous experience with local and/or country deliveries.
- Ability to read and understand loading notes, delivery notes, trip sheets and other delivery documentation.
- Ability to use measuring equipment such as a vernier and measuring tape.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, including reading, writing and speaking.
- Customer-focused approach and ability to represent the company professionally.
- Ability to multitask and assist in different operational areas when required.
- Willingness to work overtime, shifts, weekends and outside normal working hours when operationally required.
Knowledge of material grades, steel products and Macsteel products will be advantageous.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Driving and Deliveries
The driver will complete local and countrywide customer deliveries according to planned routes and delivery schedules. This includes following designated routes, recording all stops on the relevant trip sheet and immediately reporting delays, breakdowns, route deviations or other delivery concerns to management.
Drivers must ensure company vehicles are not left unattended while off company premises and must perform any reasonable and lawful duties assigned by management.
Vehicle Checks and Road Safety
The successful candidate will be responsible for completing the required daily vehicle checklist before departure and reporting any defects or concerns.
Responsibilities include:
- Maintaining the allocated vehicle in a clean, safe and roadworthy condition.
- Checking tyres, vehicle condition and safety equipment before use.
- Refuelling the vehicle when required.
- Ensuring all required vehicle and driver documentation remains valid and available.
- Complying with company SHEQ requirements and road traffic legislation.
- Following safe driving procedures at all times.
- Reporting accidents, incidents, vehicle damage and breakdowns according to company procedures.
Loading, Offloading and Material Control
Drivers will ensure that the material loaded corresponds with the relevant loading and delivery documentation. Loads must be correctly positioned, safely secured and remain within the vehicle’s permitted load limits.
The driver must check that materials are in an acceptable condition before leaving the branch and ensure that loads are protected against adverse weather conditions where required.
Duties may also include assisting with loading and offloading materials at the branch or customer premises, ensuring goods are delivered to the correct customer and address, obtaining authorised signatures and proof of delivery, and returning completed trip sheets and signed delivery documentation.
Customer Service
As a representative of Macsteel, the driver is expected to maintain a professional and customer-focused approach when dealing with customers and suppliers.
This includes:
- Providing professional service during deliveries.
- Communicating effectively with customers and suppliers.
- Wearing the required company attire and PPE.
- Handling delivery-related queries professionally.
- Following company procedures when dealing with customer concerns.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is an experienced Code 14 driver who takes road safety seriously, is dependable and understands the importance of accurate deliveries and documentation. You should be comfortable working independently, managing delivery schedules and adapting to changing operational requirements.
