Job Overview
Metso is looking for a General Worker to join its PSE Repairs Team in Alrode, Alberton. The successful candidate will support workshop operations and work alongside experienced artisans and technical professionals to ensure repair and maintenance activities are completed safely, efficiently, and to the required quality standards.
This is a hands-on opportunity for someone who is physically fit, hardworking, safety-conscious, and interested in gaining practical experience within a heavy engineering and workshop environment.
The role includes assisting with basic welding and gauging activities, assembly and stripping, painting, industrial cleaning, preparation of components, and general workshop housekeeping. It is particularly suited to candidates who have previous exposure to manufacturing, fabrication, engineering, or workshop environments.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Assisting with basic welding and gauging activities.
- Supporting assembly and stripping processes.
- Assisting artisans with assembly and disassembly work.
- Assisting with painting activities.
- Performing general workshop support duties.
- Supporting non-production-related steelwork.
- Cleaning components using approved cleaning agents.
- Using cleaning materials, chemicals, and equipment responsibly.
- Preparing components and materials for workshop activities.
- Preparing work areas before tasks begin.
- Maintaining good housekeeping throughout the workshop.
- Keeping work areas clean, safe, and organised.
- Supporting repair and maintenance activities.
- Following company policies, procedures, and workplace values.
- Complying with occupational health, safety, environmental, and quality requirements.
- Participating in safety initiatives and continuous improvement activities.
- Reporting workplace or equipment issues to the relevant supervisor.
Minimum Requirements
Matric / Grade 12 will be advantageous, but the role also places strong emphasis on practical ability and relevant workshop exposure.
Candidates should ideally have:
- Previous experience in a heavy engineering, manufacturing, fabrication, or workshop environment.
- Exposure to welding, fabrication, or gauging activities.
- Experience with industrial cleaning in an engineering or workshop environment.
- Basic understanding of workshop safety procedures.
- Good communication and literacy skills.
- Good interpersonal skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively in two languages.

Physical Requirements
This is a physically demanding workshop position. Candidates must be able to:
- Stand and walk for extended periods.
- Climb, balance, and move around a workshop environment.

- Climb stairs, ladders, or scaffolding.
- Lift and/or move items weighing up to 20 kg.
- Perform manual tasks safely.
- Work in an industrial/heavy engineering environment.
- Meet the required medical fitness standards.
Good visual ability is also required, including depth perception, peripheral vision, colour vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
