📌 ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
Macsteel is looking for a reliable, responsible and safety-conscious Code 14 Driver to join its team in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape.
The successful candidate will be responsible for completing local and long-distance deliveries, ensuring that materials reach customers safely and on time.
The role involves driving company vehicles, conducting daily vehicle inspections, ensuring roadworthiness, safely loading and offloading materials, completing delivery documentation and maintaining professional relationships with customers and suppliers.
The successful candidate must have a strong understanding of road safety, SHEQ requirements and responsible driving practices.
🚛 DRIVING & DELIVERY RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will:
- Complete local and countrywide customer deliveries according to planned routes.
- Follow designated delivery routes and schedules.
- Record all delivery stops on the relevant trip sheet.
- Ensure deliveries are completed safely and within the required timeframes.
- Report delays, breakdowns and route deviations to management immediately.
- Report any delivery-related concerns promptly.
- Ensure company vehicles are not left unattended while off company premises.
- Perform other reasonable and lawful duties as instructed by management.
🔧 VEHICLE CHECKS & SAFETY
The driver will be responsible for:
- Completing the required daily vehicle inspection before departure.
- Reporting vehicle defects or safety concerns immediately.
- Ensuring the allocated vehicle remains clean, safe and roadworthy.
- Checking tyres and the overall condition of the vehicle.
- Checking that required safety equipment is available.
- Ensuring the vehicle is refuelled when necessary.
- Keeping all required vehicle and driver documentation valid and available.
- Complying with company SHEQ requirements.
- Following road traffic legislation and safe-driving procedures.
- Reporting accidents, incidents, vehicle damage and breakdowns according to company procedures.
📦 LOADING & OFFLOADING
Responsibilities will also include:
- Checking that loaded materials correspond with loading and delivery documentation.
- Ensuring loads are correctly positioned and securely fastened.
- Ensuring vehicle loads remain within permitted weight limits.
- Checking that materials are in acceptable condition before departure.
- Protecting materials from adverse weather conditions where required.
- Assisting with loading and offloading materials at branches and customer premises.
- Ensuring goods are delivered to the correct customer and address.
- Obtaining authorised signatures and proof of delivery.
- Returning completed trip sheets, signed delivery notes and other required documentation.

🎓 MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must have:
- Grade 12 / NQF Level 4.
- A valid Code 14 / EC driver’s licence.
- A valid Professional Driving Permit (PDP).
- Previous Code 14 driving experience.
- Experience with local and/or countrywide deliveries.
- Ability to read and understand loading notes, delivery notes and trip sheets.
- Ability to understand delivery documentation.
- Ability to use basic measuring equipment such as a vernier and measuring tape.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, including reading, writing and speaking.
⭐ ADVANTAGEOUS EXPERIENCE
The following would be beneficial:
- Knowledge of material grades.
- Knowledge of steel products.
- Knowledge of Macsteel products.
- Experience working in a warehouse or logistics environment.
- Experience handling and transporting steel or similar materials.
⏰ WORKING REQUIREMENTS
The successful candidate must be willing to:
- Work overtime when required.
- Work shifts.
- Work weekends.
- Work outside normal working hours when operationally required.
- Multitask and assist in different operational areas when necessary.
