Job Overview
Dis-Chem Pharmacies is recruiting a Clinic Care Assistant (Phlebotomist) for its new Grassland Junction store in Pietermaritzburg. This permanent position is ideal for a qualified phlebotomist who is passionate about patient care and enjoys working in a primary healthcare environment.
The successful candidate will be responsible for performing safe, accurate, and efficient blood collection procedures, conducting basic health screenings, and supporting healthcare professionals in delivering quality patient care. The role also involves maintaining infection control standards, accurately documenting patient information, preparing specimens for laboratory testing, and ensuring a professional, welcoming experience for every patient.

Key Responsibilities
The Clinic Care Assistant will be responsible for:
- Performing venipuncture and capillary blood collection according to approved clinical procedures.
- Correctly labelling, storing, handling, and preparing specimens for laboratory analysis.
- Maintaining accurate documentation and tracking of all collected specimens.
- Ensuring patient comfort, dignity, and safety throughout all procedures.
- Conducting a variety of basic health screening tests, including:
- Blood pressure measurements
- Blood glucose (finger-prick) testing
- Body Mass Index (BMI) assessments
- Total cholesterol testing
- Lipogram testing
- Haemoglobin (HB) finger-prick testing
- Urine dipstick testing
- Pregnancy testing
- Recording vital signs where required.
- Recording and reporting all screening results accurately in patient records.
- Verifying patient identity before every procedure.
- Clearly explaining procedures and obtaining informed patient consent.
- Providing reassurance and professional care to patients, including children and anxious individuals.
- Answering patient questions professionally while maintaining confidentiality.
- Following infection prevention and control procedures at all times.
- Wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Safely disposing of sharps and biohazardous waste according to clinic policies.
- Maintaining a clean, organised, and hygienic clinical workstation.
- Preparing equipment and screening tools before patient consultations.
- Monitoring stock levels of consumables and reporting shortages.
- Ensuring equipment is properly maintained and calibrated where required.
- Accurately documenting procedures using electronic medical records (EMR) or paper-based systems.
- Supporting clinic operations by working closely with nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals.
- Following all Dis-Chem policies, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Health and Safety regulations, housekeeping standards, and uniform requirements.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must have:
- Grade 12 (Matric).
- Certificate or Diploma in Phlebotomy or a related healthcare qualification.
- Between 2 and 5 years’ experience in a private clinic or primary healthcare environment.
- Proven competency in venipuncture and capillary blood collection.
- Experience using Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) or First Aid certification.
- Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office.
- Willingness to work retail hours.
