Job Purpose

The General Worker is responsible for maintaining cleanliness, hygiene, and safety across operational areas used in sugar cane logistics. This includes harvesting zones, loading areas, workshops, offices, machine yards, ablution facilities, and storage areas. The role plays an important part in improving workplace safety, supporting operational efficiency, and ensuring compliance with company standards.

Key Responsibilities

Successful candidates will be responsible for:

Cleaning and Housekeeping

  • Clean workshops, loading areas, offices, ablution facilities, and operational sites.
  • Remove mud, sugar cane residue, dust, leaves, oil spills, and other debris.
  • Keep walkways, machinery access points, and work areas clean and unobstructed.
  • Maintain cleanliness around parking areas, wash bays, fuel stations, and storage yards.

Waste Management

  • Collect and dispose of waste according to company waste management procedures.
  • Empty waste bins and replace liners.
  • Transport waste safely to designated disposal points.
  • Assist with recycling and proper disposal of contaminated materials.

Health, Safety and Compliance

  • Follow all company safety procedures and PPE requirements.
  • Report spills, hazards, damaged flooring, or unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Place warning signs when cleaning operational areas.
  • Handle cleaning chemicals safely and store them correctly.
  • Help maintain a safe working environment for employees and heavy equipment operators.

Communication and Teamwork

  • Work closely with supervisors to identify cleaning priorities.
  • Coordinate with truck drivers, workshop staff, and machine operators when cleaning around equipment.
  • Report shortages of cleaning materials or faulty equipment.
  • Attend daily toolbox talks and operational safety briefings.

Equipment Maintenance

  • Use cleaning tools and equipment correctly.
  • Keep cleaning equipment clean and in good working condition.
  • Report damaged equipment promptly.
  • Ensure cleaning supplies are stored safely and neatly.

Documentation

  • Complete daily housekeeping checklists.
  • Report hazards, spills, and incidents.
  • Assist during compliance inspections and housekeeping audits.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants should have:

  • Grade 10 to Grade 12 (Matric preferred).
  • Basic cleaning or safety training will be an advantage.
  • 1–2 years of cleaning experience in an industrial, agricultural, or logistics environment.
  • Experience working around heavy equipment is beneficial.
  • Knowledge of cleaning chemicals and safe waste handling procedures.
