Job Purpose
The purpose of this role is to deliver comprehensive, person-centred nursing care by assessing patients’ needs, developing individualised care plans, coordinating treatment, and ensuring positive patient outcomes. The Clinical Nurse is also responsible for promoting patient safety, supporting colleagues, mentoring junior staff, and contributing to the continuous improvement of nursing services within the hospital.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to:
Patient Care
- Assess, plan, implement, evaluate, and document individualised nursing care.
- Coordinate patient care within a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
- Monitor patient progress and adjust nursing care plans where necessary.
- Advocate for patients and ensure their healthcare needs are met.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, doctors, and healthcare professionals.
- Participate in ward rounds with medical practitioners.
- Develop and implement comprehensive nursing care plans.
- Evaluate immediate and long-term patient needs.
- Maintain accurate patient records and shift documentation.
- Respond promptly and effectively to medical emergencies within the Scope of Practice.
- Initiate and maintain emergency resuscitation (RESUS) procedures when required.
Clinical Leadership
- Serve as a clinical resource for nursing staff.
- Assist colleagues with patient assessments and nursing interventions.
- Support effective communication between nursing management and unit staff.
- Promote evidence-based nursing practice.
- Assist in developing and reviewing patient care policies and procedures.
Quality and Risk Management
- Ensure a safe, clean, and secure environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
- Promote quality improvement initiatives.
- Monitor the safe use of medical supplies and equipment.
- Maintain compliance with hospital standards, policies, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Assist in managing resources responsibly within the allocated budget.
Education and Training
- Support the ongoing education and development of nursing staff and students.
- Participate in orientation programmes for newly appointed staff.
- Assist Clinical Facilitators with mentoring and evaluating nursing students.
- Participate in in-service training programmes.
- Keep staff informed about updated clinical policies and procedures.
- Promote continuous learning and professional development.

- Work collaboratively with doctors, specialists, allied healthcare professionals, and hospital departments.

Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Registered as a Professional Nurse with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
- Thorough knowledge of general and specialised nursing theory and practice.
- Extensive knowledge of modern nursing care principles and healthcare practices.
- Strong understanding of patient-centred nursing care.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary healthcare environment.
