The Department of Health is inviting qualified and registered Social Workers to apply for an exciting opportunity within the HIV/AIDS, STI and TB (HAST) Directorate. This position offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact by providing comprehensive psycho-social support services to individuals, families, and communities while promoting health and well-being.
The successful candidate will deliver integrated therapeutic psycho-social interventions to people of all age groups, using various social work methods, including prevention, early intervention, screening, counselling, and community-based support. The role requires close collaboration with multidisciplinary healthcare teams and external stakeholders to ensure coordinated, quality healthcare services.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must have:
- An appropriate Social Work qualification that allows registration with the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP).
- Current registration with the SACSSP.
- A valid South African driver’s licence.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation, policies, and ethical practices relating to Social Work and public healthcare.
- Good communication, interpersonal, computer literacy, planning, problem-solving, and report-writing skills.
- The ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
- Experience or interest in community health services will be an added advantage.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
- Provide therapeutic psycho-social services to patients, families, and communities.
- Conduct assessments, counselling, crisis intervention, and referrals.
- Promote prevention, early detection, and improved quality of life for service users.
- Collaborate with departments such as Home Affairs, Social Development, SASSA, SAPS, Non-Governmental Organisations, Traditional Healers, and Faith-Based Organisations.
- Work closely with Primary Health Care staff, Ward-Based Outreach Teams (WBOTs), HAST, Mental Health, Clinical Forensic Medical Services, and Child Care Services.
- Establish referral pathways across district, regional, and tertiary healthcare facilities.
- Train and support healthcare workers and community health workers.
- Attend multidisciplinary meetings, clinical supervision sessions, and case discussions.
- Maintain accurate patient records, statistics, reports, diaries, and administrative documentation.
Salary Package
The successful candidate will be appointed according to the appropriate salary level:
- Grade 1: R338 208 – R397 668 per annum
- Grade 2: R413 004 – R478 395 per annum
- Grade 3: R496 668 – R583 833 per annum
- Grade 4: R608 859 – R754 785 per annum
