Purpose of the Role

The Assistant Manager Designate position is a management development opportunity designed for individuals who are passionate about building a long-term career in retail management. Through structured training, successful candidates will learn the Checkers way of operating stores while gaining valuable leadership, operational, and customer service experience. The role is intended to prepare future managers by providing exposure to all aspects of store operations and team leadership.

The successful candidate will support the store Management Team while developing the skills and knowledge necessary to effectively manage a retail environment. The position focuses on customer satisfaction, operational excellence, sales growth, and team development.

Key Responsibilities

The Assistant Manager Designate will participate in a structured training programme covering all major areas of retail management. Responsibilities include learning and applying effective store management principles while supporting the daily operations of the store.

Candidates will assist in driving sales and profitability by helping maintain high standards of customer service and operational efficiency. They will contribute to the recruitment, training, and development of team members while learning how to motivate and lead employees effectively.

The role also involves supporting operational initiatives in line with company policies and procedures. Candidates will gain experience in inventory management, stock control, and merchandising strategies designed to optimise sales performance and improve the customer shopping experience.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Learning all aspects of store operations through formal training and practical experience.
  • Supporting daily store functions such as opening and closing procedures.
  • Assisting with cash handling and stock management activities.
  • Helping to ensure customer satisfaction by addressing customer queries and resolving complaints professionally.
  • Participating in sales monitoring and analysing sales reports to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Supporting visual merchandising activities to maintain attractive and effective product displays.
  • Ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations as well as company policies and procedures.
  • Contributing to a safe, organised, and customer-focused shopping environment.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must possess a Grade 12/Matric qualification.

A diploma or degree in Business Management, Retail Management, or a related field will be considered advantageous. However, relevant work experience may be accepted as a substitute for formal qualifications in certain circumstances.

Experience Requirements

Previous experience in retail or customer service roles is preferred. Candidates should demonstrate a genuine interest in pursuing a career in retail management and be willing to participate actively in the development and training programme.

While prior management experience is not specifically required, applicants should show potential for leadership and a willingness to take on increasing levels of responsibility within the organisation.
