Purpose of the Position

The Peer Educator – AYP (Adolescent and Youth Programme) role is focused on providing direct support to HIV testing services within both community-based and facility-based settings in the OR Tambo District.

The Peer Educator will support the integration of comprehensive HIV prevention and care services, including pre- and post-test counselling, PrEP and PEP services, linkage to treatment, viral load suppression, and re-entry into care for individuals who have defaulted treatment. The role places strong emphasis on community engagement, psychosocial support, and demand creation among high-risk and vulnerable populations.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following core activities:

Community Mobilisation and Mapping
  • Conduct community mapping activities, under the guidance of the Nurse Clinician and Enrolled Nurse, to identify hotspots and areas with high-risk populations
  • Use knowledge of the local community to identify and engage Community-Based Organisations (CBOs), youth structures, youth ambassadors, and Community Health Workers
  • Support mobilisation activities aimed at increasing access to HIV testing and prevention services
HIV Testing Support and Linkage to Care
  • Conduct pre-screening to identify individuals at high risk of HIV infection
  • Support community and facility-based HIV testing services
  • Facilitate linkage to care for individuals who test positive
  • Support re-entry into care for clients who have interrupted treatment
Treatment Literacy and Psychosocial Support
  • Provide treatment literacy support, including education on PrEP, PEP, adherence, and disclosure
  • Deliver psychosocial support through:
    • One-on-one counselling and consultation sessions
    • Group counselling sessions such as youth care clubs and caregiver support groups
    • Health talks to create demand for adherence, psychosocial support, and disclosure services
Programme Support and Administration
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation of services provided
  • Support reporting and data collection in line with programme requirements
  • Work collaboratively with clinical and community teams to ensure continuity of care
Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Grade 12 / NCV qualification
  • Be between the ages of 20 and 35 years
  • Accredited and recognised 10-day HIV Counselling Certificate
  • Certified to conduct finger prick HIV testing
  • Minimum of one (1) year related experience and/or training
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English and isiXhosa
  • Residing within the OR Tambo District
  • A valid driver’s licence and own transport would be advantageous
  • Knowledge or experience in a DREAMS or related programme would be advantageous
